Wiemer Named to NFCA Great Lakes All-Region Team

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced junior Hayley Wiemer, Sylvania, Ohio native was named to the 2008 NFCA Great Lakes All-Region team on Wednesday (May 14). Wiemer is only the second Falcon in program history to be honored twice in her career as an All-Region selection.
Wiemer is also a three-time All-MAC first team selection, a two-time ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team selection and MAC All-Tournament honoree. She is not only a leader in the MAC but is ranked among the top 100 in nation in six different categories.
In her junior campaign she led the Falcons with a .637 slugging percentage and 11 homers, tying the BGSU single season record she set last season, now second in career homers with 23 only three long balls shy of tying the BGSU career record (26) held by Gina Rango. Wiemer is the only Falcon in program history to post two seasons of double-digit home run performances as well as the only to do so in consecutive seasons. She led the Falcons, the MAC and is 43rd in the nation for homers. Wiemer became only the second Falcon to hit two homers in a game twice in a single season and three times in her career as she crushed two homers in the season opener against Lipscomb (2/22/08) and two homers in the last game of the regular season against Akron (5/4/08). She was able to accomplish all of this from the plate while becoming the most walked Falcon, player in the MAC and fifth in the nation as opponents gave her first base 37 times this season averaging 0.86 walks per game.
Wiemer dominated from the pitching mound as well this season as she posted a 15-7 overall record and an 11-1 record in the MAC. She led the MAC and is 16th in the nation for walks allowed per seven innings only giving up 1.08 walks per seven innings of work from the circle. To end the season Wiemer posted the lowest ERA of any pitcher in the MAC Tournament with a 0.56 ERA, allowing only two earned runs in 25.0 innings of work, fanning 11 batters.
The junior hurler carries a perfect 4.00 grade point average as an Adolescent/Young Adult/Secondary Education major. Wiemer's performance on the field and in the classroom has been honored multiple times this season. She is the reigning BGSU Junior Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was named All-MAC first team for the third straight season and ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District first team for the second consecutive season. She was also named to the MAC All-Tournament team for the second straight year. Wiemer earned MAC East Pitcher of the week and MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week twice this season. In her career as a Falcon she is a four time MAC East Pitcher of the Week, a four time MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week and was named MAC East Player of the week once.
