TAMPA, Fla. (BGSUFalcons.com) - The nationally-ranked University of South Florida picked up a 3-0 win over the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team Saturday night (Aug. 30). The non-conference match was held at Pepin Stadium on the University of Tampa campus, due to continuing construction of the USF Soccer Stadium.
The match was the season opener for both clubs.
The Bulls, who advanced to the Round of 16 of last year's NCAA Championships, got a goal midway through the first half to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. USF, ranked 11th in the nation in this year's College Soccer News preseason poll and 18th in the NSCAA/adidas rankings, picked up a second goal in the 66th minute, and completed the scoring with just over six minutes left in the second half.
Zak Boggs opened the scoring, off a cross from Jordan Seabrook. Bernardo Anor and Seabrook each scored in the second half, with Jorge Mora and Boggs getting assists on the final goal.
USF was credited with a 17-1 advantage in total shots. Falcon senior Paul Shoemaker made seven saves in goal for the Brown and Orange, playing all 90 minutes.
Bogg had six of the Bulls' 17 shots, including five of his team's 10 shots on goal.
For the Falcons, freshman Colin Armstrong had the lone shot attempt on the night. Armstrong, making his BGSU debut, was among five Falcons to make their collegiate debuts in the match.
BGSU will once again head south next weekend, and again will face a nationally-ranked opponent. The Falcons will head to Greenville, S.C., for the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational. The Brown and Orange will face the host school, No. 20/25 Furman, in Friday action (Sept. 5), before meeting the College of Charleston on Sunday (Sept. 7).
FALCON NOTES
* BGSU's starting lineup featured two seniors (Shoemaker and Ryan Davis), a redshirt junior (Chuko Evwaraye), two true juniors (Tyler Deal and Hunter Van Houten), a redshirt sophomore (Ahmad Smith), two sophomores (Dusko Topolic and Thomas McLean), a redshirt freshman (Chris Jurtovski) and two freshmen (Tanner Fink and Vuk Krkeljic).
* The three frosh -- Fink, redshirt freshman Jurtovski and Krkeljic -- each were making their initial collegiate starts, obviously.
* Redshirt sophomore Ahmad Smith also started the match, as mentioned ... Smith, who played in 16 matches in 2006, sat out last season as a redshirt.
* In addition to Armstrong, another freshman, John Barr, came off the bench to make his collegiate debut ... Barr saw approximately 10 minutes of action in the second half.
* Saturday's USF match was the first of five consecutive matches away from home to open the season for the Falcons ... BGSU plays contests in Florida, South Carolina and Arkansas before the home opener, on Sept. 19 vs. IPFW.
