Falcon Women Finish 16th of 33 Teams At Stanford Invitational

PALO ALTO, Calif. - A career-best 6,000 meter time of 22:14 by senior Kara Butler (Okemos, Mich.), helped the Bowling Green State University women's cross country team finish 16th of 33 teams Saturday at the 35th Annual Stanford University Cross Country Invitational at the Stanford Golf Course. Butler finished 29th overall of 278 runners, as the Falcon women earned 375 points in an event that featured many of the country's top squads.
The BG men also competed in the event that featured a total of 234 runners, as they finished 25th overall with a team score of 739. Christopher Moody (Davidsonville, Md.) would finish as BG's No. 1 runner for the third-straight event of 2008, as the sophomore came across the tape in the 90th-spot with a time of 26:39.
The host Cardinal would defend their title in both the men's and women's races, as the men placed all seven of their runners in the top-29, while the women placed all seven of theirs in the top-41. Taking individual honors in the men's 8K was Chico State's Scotty Bauhs with a time of 23:45, while UC Irvine's Laura Olvera took top honors in the women's 6K with a time of 20:42.
The day began with the men's 6K, where the Falcons had all five of their runners finish in the top-178. Coming across the line 59 seconds behind Moody for BG in the 142nd-spot was Jesse Smuda (Deshler, Ohio). Smuda crossed with a new personal-best 8K time of 27:38 to finish 24 seconds in front of 156th-place finisher Aaron Smuda (Rogers City, Mich.), who crossed with a time of 28:02.
Finishing out the day's results for the Falcons were newcomers Abraham Busienei (Eldoret, Kenya) and Ben Leininger (Beavercreek, Ohio) who finished 216th and 224th, respectively.
On the women's side, the Falcon women continued to show why they are one the best squads in the Mid-American Conference, as they had five or their runners finish in the top-120, including four in the top-100. Just 12 seconds behind Butler in the 35th-spot was senior Jamie Roflow (Cincinnati, Ohio), who ran a time of 22:26. She followed by Bowling Green native Kylie Korsnack who was the No. 3 ruuner for BG, finishing 93rd with a new personal-best 6K time of 23:21.
Other Falcons who had strong finishes were sophomore Ashley Fischer (Fremont, Ohio), who finished 98th with a time of 23:24 and Autumn Dettman (Watertown, Wis.), who finished 120th with a time of 23:46.
Celina, Ohio native Lyndi Springer came across the line in the 141st position and a time of 24:09, while Carly Wells (Palatine, Ill.) rounded out the BG squad in the 144th-position and a time of 24:13.
Both teams will return to action on Fri., Oct. 10 when they head to Delaware, Ohio for the All-Ohio Championships. The event will kick-off at 2 p.m.
