GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team battled nationally-ranked Furman University to a scoreless draw for over 80 minutes on the Paladins' home pitch, but the hosts broke the tie with a pair of late goals for a 2-0 win over the Falcons. The match, part of day-one action at the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational, was held at Stone Soccer Stadium Friday night (Sept. 5).
The win improved Furman to 1-1-0 on the young season, while the Falcons drop to 0-2-0.
Andrew Krysiak and Brooks Duff each netted goals for the hosts. Krysiak received a pass from Patrick Murray and slipped a shot past BGSU senior goalkeeper Paul Shoemaker into the righthand corner at 80:34.
Duff doubled the lead less than five minutes later. Dane Roberts played a pass from the right side of the pitch back into the middle of the box to Duff. The soph had his first shot blocked, but scored on the rebound from 12 yards out for a 2-0 Paladin lead.
Shoemaker thwarted several Furman scoring chances to keep the match scoreless in the first half. The Falcon senior made a sliding save on a Krysiak effort, then denied back-to-back shots from Krysiak and Warren Creavalle.
The Falcons played the final 36-plus minutes of the match a man down, after freshman Vuk Krkeljic was issued his second yellow card of the night. Furman managed a 19-5 advantage in shot attempts, including a 9-1 margin in the opening half. The Paladins had an 8-2 edge in shots on goal in the match.
Shoemaker made six saves in his 90 minutes of work. At the other end of the field, sophomore Dusko Topolic had three of the Falcons' five shot attempts, including both SOG.
Josh Zimmer made a pair of saves for the Paladins to pick up the shutout.
"We got an absolutely stellar performance from Paul Shoemaker tonight," said BGSU head coach Fred Thompson. "He was fantastic -- he not only kept us in the game, he also gave us a chance to win. Paul was very, very good on the night.
"Gavin Dozier had a good game for us, working hard, and Hunter (Van Houten) and Dusko (Topolic) were very solid in the midfield. Once we went a man down, we showed some great heart and determination, and it was very good to see.
"I think anyone watching the game would have thought it unfortunate that we didn't get out of there with at least a draw. I also think anyone watching the game would have been very proud of all of these guys. Obviously, we will take what we can out of that, and move forward to the next one."
In the first match of the day, four different players scored goals for the University of Washington, as the Huskies posted a 4-1 win over the College of Charleston.
The Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational concludes Sunday (Sept. 7), as the Falcons face College of Charleston at 11:00 a.m., and Furman meets Washington at 1:30 p.m.
"Charleston had a rough game against a very strong Washington team, and they will be ready to go against us on Sunday," said Thompson. "But, hopefully, we will take the lessons learned from our first two matches, and come back better and stronger as well."
