With the win, the Eagles improve to 10-3-5 overall and 6-1-3 in MAC play, solidifying their second-place standing in the conference. The Falcons drop to 5-11-3 and 1-6-3, respectively.
Sunday's loss also eliminated the Falcons from the MAC Tournament race. BGSU will miss the tourney for the first time since the 2001 season.
The Falcons outshot the Eagles, 16-11, and BGSU more than doubled the home team's shots-on-goal total, with 11 shots on target to Eastern's five. But, the Eagles got a goal from Ashley Rodrigues with just under 11 minutes gone, then saw Amanda Marsh provide some insurance just over five minutes into the second period.
Eastern's Monique Budani made 10 saves to pick up the shutout in goal. For the Falcons, redshirt junior Alexa Arsenault had a pair of saves, while true freshman Laura Arnold worked the final 29:01, and stopped the only shot on goal she faced. Both defenses were credited with one 'team save' on the afternoon.
Rodrigues gave the Eagles what would prove to be the winner at the 10:55 mark. The EMU senior received a through-ball from Carissa Wilson, putting her in on a breakaway. Rodrigues was able to hit a one-time effort just over the outstretched hand of Arsenault, giving the hosts the lead.
Marsh scored with just 5:08 gone in the second half, after Chelsea Detrick had played the ball back to her.
In addition to both shot attempts and shots on goal, the Falcons held a sizable advantage in corner kicks, with a 9-2 lead in that category.
The Falcons' 2009 season will conclude on Thursday (Oct. 29), as BGSU makes the short trip north to take on the arch-rival University of Toledo. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Rockets' Scott Park Field.
