Lawrence, Luther Named Papa John's Athletes Of The Week
October 26, 2009 | General
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Papa John's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are men's soccer player Jacob Lawrence and volleyball player Shari Luther.
Male Athlete of the Week
Jacob Lawrence, a senior soccer player from Brandon, Miss., was involved in the scoring of all three of BGSU's goals on the week. He had the primary assist in Bowling Green's 2-1 loss at Michigan State Wednesday then scored both Falcon goals in a 2-2 tie with Hartwick Sunday. Hartwick entered the match with a perfect 3-0-0 MAC record and had not allowed more than one goal in any this year but Lawrence scored twice in a seven minute stretch of the second half. Lawrence now has a three-game point-scoring streak and has totaled nine points (four goals and an assist) in those three contests.
Female Athlete of the Week
Shari Luther, a senior volleyball player from Colgate, Wisc., had 29 kills and nine blocks in two matches as the Falcons split two MAC contests this weekend. In a five-set come-from-behind win over Ball State, Luther had 16 kills and six blocks, hitting .484 for the match. Despite a four-set loss to Toledo the next day, Luther again had a stellar outing, posting 13 kills and three blocks, hitting .429 for the match. For her efforts, Luther was named MAC East Offensive Player of the Week and she leads the league with a .381 attack percentage on the season.
