Bowling Green/Kent State To Kick Off Centennial Cup Saturday
October 06, 2009 | General
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University and Kent State University athletic departments will kick off the battle for the Centennial Cup Saturday in a pair of events. The Centennial Cup is an all-sports trophy competition instituted this year to celebrate the 100-year anniversaries of both schools in 2009-10.
Bowling Green and Kent State will compete head-to-head twice on Saturday as the football team plays at Kent State at 3:30 p.m. and the volleyball team plays there at 7 p.m.
“The Centennial Cup is a great opportunity to create healthy competition among the top collegiate athletes at Kent State and BGSU during this historic celebration,” Gymnastics Coach Kerrie Beach said. “Kent State is already a huge rival for our gymnastics program and this will only fuel the fire for our athletes to go for the win on competition day. Every one of our gymnasts wants the Cup to reside at BGSU! This really brings an extra element of excitement every time our athletes face Kent State in competition.”
Each time Bowling Green and Kent State compete head-to-head in 2009-10, a point will be awarded to the winning institution. Any head-to-head postseason competition will also count towards the standings. The 2010 football game between Bowling Green and Kent State will serve as the conclusion of the competition and the trophy will be awarded to the winning school at that time.
“What a great way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of two great institutions,” Baseball Coach Danny Schmitz said. “The competitive spirit and rich history will make the Centennial Cup a very interesting story to watch.”
