Zlabis, Solway Named Papa John's Athletes Of The Week
November 16, 2009 | General
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Papa John's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are hockey player David Solway and volleyball player Alex Zlabis.
Male Athlete of the Week
David Solway, a junior hockey player from Green Bay, Wisc., had a pair of goals and assists in two games against Alaska this week. On Friday night, Solway scored two points in BGSU's first win of the season. He had second-hand helpers on the Falcons' opening goal scored by Jordan Samuels-Thomas and the final goal of the game netted by senior Tommy Dee. Saturday (Nov. 14) Solway scored two of the Falcons' three goals in the Falcons near comeback on the Nanooks. Though the Falcons lost, 5-3, Solway led the charge with goals in the second and third periods to draw the Falcons within one score of the Nanooks before the visitors dumped an empty net goal to seal their victory.
Female Athlete of the Week
Alex Zlabis, a junior volleyball player from Wheaton, Ill., joined the elite 30-dig club by posting 33 digs in the team's five-set victory over Kent State. She followed that up by posting 16 digs in the team's three-set loss to Ohio and averaged 6.12 digs per set on the weekend. Zlabis also had a perfect 1.000 serve receive percentage on the weekend as the Falcons split their two weekend MAC matches.
