BGSU faces Detroit, FAU at Cochrane Field
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team will close the 2009 season with a pair of home matches this week ... the Falcons of head coach Eric Nichols will step outside of Mid-American Conference play for one final time, facing the University of Detroit Mercy in Wednesday action (Nov. 4) ... kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at BGSU's Cochrane Field ... then, the Brown and Orange will meet Florida Atlantic University in Saturday (Nov. 7) action at Cochrane ... FAU is a MAC affiliate member in men's soccer ... the Falcons and Owls will meet in a noon kickoff at Cochrane.

Saturday's FAU match will mark 'Senior Day' at Cochrane Field, with the six seniors in the BGSU men's soccer program recognized prior to the match ... that list includes Tyler Deal, Gavin Dozier, Chuko Evwaraye, Cameron Hepple, Jacob Lawrence and Hunter Van Houten.

Falcon senior co-captains Jacob Lawrence and Hunter Van Houten have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV University Division team, it was announced Friday night (Oct. 30) ... both players earned first-team honors, meaning their names will now appear on the national ballot ... Lawrence earned the district honor for the second time in his BGSU career, having also been named to the first team in 2008 ... Van Houten earns academic all-district accolades for the first time ... Lawrence maintains a 3.93 cumulative GPA as an interpersonal communications major ... Van Houten, a health science major, has a 3.95 cumulative GPA in his BGSU career to date ... the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District University Division Team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee ... to be nominated, a student-athlete must hold at least sophomore status, be a starter or key reserve, and carrry a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher ... team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
LAST WEEK
The Falcons dropped a pair of matches, falling at Wright State by a 2-0 count Wednesday night (Oct. 28) before losing a 3-0 verdict against Northern Illinois on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 31) ... in Dayton, WSU's Braden Fleak scored both goals, finding the back of the net in the 22nd minute and providing some insurance for the Raiders with just five minutes to go in the match ... freshman goalkeeper Dylan Schoettley made a total of four saves for the Falcons ... on Saturday, Juan Hoyos scored a pair of goals for NIU ... Luis De La Cerda started the scoring with 19 minutes gone, and Hoyos scored in the 32nd and 78th minutes ... Schoettley made three saves vs. the Huskies.

FALCON COACH ERIC NICHOLS
Eric Nichols is in his first season at the BGSU helm ... he was hired on Feb. 17, 2009, becoming just the fifth head coach in the 45-year history of the program ... Nichols came to BGSU after spending the 2008 season as assistant coach at Davidson College ... he had a successful debut to his BGSU head-coaching career, as the Falcons defeated Marshall, 2-0, in the regular-season opener, and picked up his first MAC victory at Buffalo ... Nichols has a 2-11-3 record at the helm of the men's soccer Falcons, and is 61-33-4 in his fifth season as a collegiate head coach ... prior to his stint at Davidson, Nichols was the head men's soccer coach at Ohio Dominican for four seasons (2004-07) ... under his guidance, the Panthers recorded a 59-22-1 (.728) record, including a final ranking of fourth in 2007 ... that team advanced all the way to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament ...
