Detroit, Mich. – Guards Joe Jakubowski and Jordon Crawford combined for 28 second-half points but the Bowling Green men's basketball team was unable to overcome a 20-point deficit in a 73-69 loss to Detroit Saturday.
Jakubowski scored all 17 of his points in the second half and Crawford added 11 more as BGSU put together a 22-4 run midway through the second half. Detroit's Eli Holman scored on a lay-up with 16:44 to go to give the Titans a 45-25 lead but Marc Larson scored 43 seconds later to start the Bowling Green comeback.
Jakubowski knocked down a pair of free-throws and followed with a three-pointer that made it 47-32 before Larson added two free-throws to cut the deficit to 13. Otis Polk made a pair of shots from the charity stripe with 12:57 left and Jakubowski finished up a three-point play that cut the deficit in half at 49-39 with 11:46 to play.
Bowling Green continued the push as Crawford scored the next six points on a free-throw, a lay-up and a three-pointer to make it 49-45. The Falcons closed out the run with two Jakubowski free-throws with 9:04 remaining to make the score 49-47.
From there, the two teams traded baskets as Bowling Green got within two on four other occasions and had opportunities to get closer than that throughout. But the Falcons came up empty on a handful of possessions and Detroit made just enough free-throws down the stretch to hang on.
Five Falcons scored in double-figures as Jakubowski led the way with 17, followed by Crawford with a career-high 15. Scott Thomas and Polk had 11 each and Erik Marschall came off the bench for 10 points.
Detroit led 37-22 at the half, a stark contrast to the game between the two teams a year ago. The Titans scored just 38 points in the entire game in Anderson Arena, losing 58-38 to Bowling Green. But Detroit shot 52 percent in the first half and made 4-of-10 three-pointers to build the lead.
The Titans used a dominating effort on the boards, holding a 38-27 advantage, including 17 offensive rebounds. That performance helped Detroit to a 20-12 edge in second chance points and helped the Titans get seven more shot attempts than Bowling Green for the game.
Shooting percentages were fairly even as Detroit shot 46 percent and BG was at 45 percent. The Falcons made 6-of-17 (35 percent) three-pointers and the Titans were 4-of-13 (31 percent).
Detroit improves to 7-4 with the win and Bowling Green falls to 5-4, snapping the Falcons four-game win streak. BGSU will be back in action Dec. 28 when the team plays at Temple at 7 p.m. in a contest that will be played at McGonigle Hall. Temple is just outside of the top 25 in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls.
