Falcons Split On Day Two in Orlando

ORLANDO, Florida - The Bowling Green State University softball team split their games on day two of the UCF-Early Bird Tournament today (Feb. 14) defeating University of Texas-Arlington, 3-2 and falling to South Carolina, 5-0. Sophomore Zada Lines (1-0) made her first career start also recording her first career win in the Falcons victory over the Mavericks, striking out two batters in six and one-third innings of work. Senior Hayley Wiemer picked up her first save of the season and moved to 2-1 on the season after the Falcons loss to the Gamecocks.
The Falcons will finish their stay in Orlando, Florida Sunday (Feb. 15) against No. 25 Kansas at 11:00 a.m.
Falcons Fall to South Carolina, 5-0
The Falcons started off day two of the UCF-Early Bird Tournament against the South Carolina Gamecocks as they fell, 5-0. The game started off as a pitchers battle with Hayley Wiemer starting in the circle for BG.
The Falcons got their offense going early as Melissa West recorded the first hit of the game in the top of the first inning with a single to left field. South Carolina then kept the Falcon bats under wrap until the top of the fourth inning as Karmen Coffey led off with a single to left center.
The Falcon defense shut down the Gamecocks' for the first four innings giving up no hits as Wiemer struck out 10 batters, tying her career high, including six straight Gamecocks in the third and fourth inning. However with bases loaded and two outs in the fifth South Carolina was able to score five runs off of two hits.
BG once again got the offense going in the top of the sixth as Susan Sontag singled up the middle to get the Falcon bats going. Despite getting two runners on base the Falcons weren't able to score.
The Falcons didn't allow South Carolina anymore runs but weren't able to come back from the five run deficit losing their first game of the season.
Leading the Falcon offense each recording a hit were Coffey, West and Sontag who went 1-for-2 against the Gamecocks.
Lines and Falcons Down Mavericks, 3-2
After dropping their first game of the season the Falcons came back with big sticks in their second game of the day against the UTA Mavericks, smashing 10 hits on the game for a 3-2 win. Sophomore Zada Lines started her first career game from the mound for the Falcons and eventually picked up her first career win. Lines and the BG defense kept the Mavericks scoreless for six innings.
The Falcon sticks got started early as Rachel Proehl led off for BG with a single to the left side of the infield. Karmen Coffey then moved Proehl to second base with a sacrifice bunt, bringing up Melissa West who kept things going with a single. Despite runners on first and third the Falcons weren't able to score in the bottom of the first.
The Mavericks came back in the top of the second with two singles of their own but Lines and the Falcon defense kept them scoreless.
The Orange and Brown scored first in the bottom of the second as Katelynn Boso, Lindsay Arney and Susan Sontag came up with three straight singles that led to the first of three Falcon runs, taking a 1-0 in the bottom of the second. BG came right back in the bottom of the third to score another run making it, 2-0. The Falcons kept their offense alive with three more hits between the fourth and fifth inning but weren't able to score again until the bottom of the sixth after two singles from Arney and Proehl, extending the Falcons lead to three runs 3-0.
The Mavericks didn't give up in the top of the seventh as they scored two runs off of two hits and a Falcon error coming within one run of the Falcons. However, Hayley Wiemer and the Falcons were able to end the inning and game before the Mavericks were able to score again, giving the Falcons a 3-2 win over UTA.
Lines recorded her first collegiate win, while Wiemer picked up her first save of the season. The Falcon bats were hot once again as they totaled for 10 hits against the Mavericks. Leading the BG offense was Proehl going 3-for-4, recording her second career multiple hit game and first career three hit game. Arney also recorded a multiple hit game going 2-for-3, her first career multiple hit game.
