Falcons Finish Third at All-Ohio Championships

FINDLAY, Ohio - Bowling Green State University would finish third out of 12 and record 13 scoring athletes at the All-Ohio Championships. Of these 13 athletes five would score in multiple events in the second day of competition and one would become a provisional national qualifier.
"I was very pleased with the way the team competed this weekend." said head coach Cami Wells, "They really showed a lot of heart this weekend and competed hard across the board. We knew we needed contributions from everyone to have a successful team effort and they did that this weekend."
Senior TaKarra Dunning showed how much heart and effort she had in the shot put event. Dunning would become the team's only indoor provisional qualifier this season by tossing the shot put 15.25 meters and place second overall.
One of the biggest personal contributors for the Falcons was sophomore Brittani McNeal with 13.25 total points. McNeal would place second in the long jump with a distance of 5.62 meters, fifth in the 200 meter dash timing in at 25.97 seconds and would run the first leg of the 4x400 meter relay which placed fourth.
The next highest scorer was junior Shantell Lewis with 13 total points for the Falcons. Lewis would place second in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.70 seconds and ran a time of 25.89 seconds in the 200 meter dash, placing fourth.
Sophomore Heather Conger was next in line with 9.25 points in overall competition. Conger would place second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:17.85 and ran a leg of the 4X400 meter relay for BGSU. She also was a scorer in the first day of competition by running a leg for the second place distance medley relay.
Senior Whitney Hartman would be another Falcon to score in multiple events. Hartman scored a total of nine points in the shot put, placing eighth throwing 13.50 meters, and weight throw, placing second throwing 18.04 meters.
The final falcon to score in multiple events on the second day was freshman Saisha Gailliard. She would be the leading scorer of the freshman with 5.75 points by placing fourth in the 800 meter with a time of 2:19.84 and running in the fourth place 4x400 meter relay. Gailliard would score in three events overall with her participation in the distance medley relay.
In the one mile run sophomore Autumn Dettmann, who also scored in the distance medley relay, would place third with a time of 5:05.59. Six seconds behind Dettmann, junior Andrea Pereira de Almeida would finish eighth overall.
"This was a good weekend for us with many highlights," said Wells.
Junior Carly Wells would tie with Gailliard in fourth place of the 800 meter run with a time of 2:19.84. Wells also scored in the distance medley relay for the Falcons on day one of competition.
Distance runners Kara Butler, senior, and Sally Jerop Kandie, freshman, would also score points for the Falcons. Butler would place third in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:12.32 and Kandie would run a time of 18:43.41 in the 5,000 meter run placing eighth.
There would be two more scorers in the field events, including junior Sabrina Forstein would place fifth in the pole vault clearing 3.56 meters and sophomore Rachael Doughty would jump 5.00 meters to place seventh in the long jump.
The University of Cincinnati (157) and Ohio University (104) would finish at the top and Mid-American Conference rival University of Toledo (83) would finish after BGSU in fourth place.
"Now we just need to recover from the weekend and stress of the meet and get focused on getting back out in two weeks and giving another strong effort at the indoor MAC meet," said Wells.
The Falcons will be competing in the Indoor Mid American Conference Championships Saturday Feb. 29 to Sunday March 1.
