BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The swimming and diving Falcons (1-6 MAC; 2-7 overall) fell just short to the Akron Zips (1-5; 5-6) this afternoon, losing 158-140, in their final home meet before hosting the Mid-American Conference Championships, Feb. 25-28. Freshman Vicky Yu had another strong performance as she took three first place finishes.
Yu, a native of Shenyang, China, took top honors in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.74), the 400-yard IM (4:34.92) and the 100-yard butterfly (57.77). Yu was only two seconds off of breaking her own record of 2:02.02 in the 100-yard butterfly.
"I am very proud of this team," said head coach Keri Buff. "We hate to lose the close ones, but we stepped up and raced really well this weekend."
Another strong performance came from senior co-captain Alisha Yee who took first place in the 200-yard backstroke, second place in the 100-yard backstroke, and third in the 100-yard butterfly. Yee, who currently holds records in both the 100-and 200-yard backstroke, was only seconds away from breaking those records and will look to set new times at the MAC Championships.
Meg Richardson and Katie Womack each took first place finishes; Richardson in the 100-yard breaststroke and Womack in the 200-yard breaststroke. Richardson also placed second in the 100-yard freestyle while Womack took third in the 400-yard IM.
The Orange and Brown went one and three in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Yee, Richardson, Sarah Burston and Carrie Enright swam to first with a time of 1:48.44 while teammates Sami Jordan, Amanda Rom, Liz Harper and Frankie Houck took third (1:50.51).
Bomicino, Houck, Rom and Jordan also added to the Falcons efforts as Bomicino took second in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:38.46), Houck second in the 50-yard freestyle (24.85), Rom second in the 200-yard breaststroke and third in the 100-yard breaststroke and Jordan with two third place finishes in the 100-and 200-yard backstroke.
The Diving Falcons also added points for the Falcons as Katherine Shannon finished in fourth place in the one-meter dive, with teammates Molly Wood and Stephanie Saliga right behind her in sixth and eighth. In the three-meter dive, Wood took fifth while Shannon and Saliga finished in sixth and eighth, respectively.
All together, the swimming and diving Falcons seven first place finishes, six second place finishes, and seven third place finishes.
The Falcons are now ready for the MAC Championships which will be held at our own Cooper Pool, giving the Falcons home-pool advantage later this month.
"We have set ourselves up to be very successful at MACs," Buff said. "Our goal the next two weeks is to get a lot of rest and get healthy."
