Falcons Head South to the Buzz Classic

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball team will pack their bags and head south to Atlanta, Georgia for the Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech (March 6-8). The Falcons will play five games at the three-day tournament, including taking on two teams for the first time in program history. The Falcons will start off the tournament against Western Kentucky Friday (March 6) at 1:00 p.m. and Purdue at 4:00 p.m. Day two (March 7) of the Buzz Classic will pit the Falcons against Georgia State at 11:00 a.m. and Albany at 1:00 p.m. BG will wrap-up the tournament against Austin Peay on Sunday (March 8) at 10:00 a.m.

BUZZ CLASSIC MATCH-UPS ON THE DIAMOND
Falcons vs. Lady Toppers • (3/6 • 1:00 p.m.)
The Falcons will start off the Buzz Classic with the "Battle of Bowling Green" as they take on Western Kentucky from Bowling Green, Kentucky ... this will be the first meet in program history for the two BG teams on the softball field ... the Lady Toppers are currently 9-3 overall after sweeping Florida International in a three game series (6-0, 4-3 in 10 inns., 4-1) ... offensively five of the starting Lady Toppers are hitting a .318 or better, while defensively Ryan Rogge is leading the team with a 7-1 record and a 1.48 ERA.
Falcons vs. Boilermakers • (3/6 • 4:00 p.m.)
The Falcons will then match-up against regional rival Purdue for the first of three times this season ... the Boilermakers are currently 7-4 overall after winning the War Eagle Classic (Feb. 21-22) with a 3-1 record ... the Boilermakers opened the tournament falling to Middle Tennessee State (11-4) and then won three straight defeating Austin Peay (6-4), Winthrop (2-0) and Auburn (3-1) ... the Boilermakers lead the Falcons 1-2 in the all time series ... after losing the first two match-ups in the all-time series the Falcons shut-out the Boilermakers, 6-0 in their last meeting in 2006.
Falcons vs. Panthers • (3/7 • 11:00 a.m.)
The Orange and Brown will open day two of the Buzz Classic against Georgia State ... the Panthers are currently 6-6 overall after sweeping Georgia Southern (Feb. 25) in a double-header 1-0, 11-6 ... the Falcons are undefeated and lead the Panthers 2-0 in the all-time series ... in their last meeting in 2004 the Falcons run-ruled the Panthers 12-0 in five innings.
Falcons vs. Great Danes • (3/7 • 1:00 p.m.)
BG will battle Albany for the first time in program history on day two of the tournament ... the Great Danes are currently 6-6 overall after going 2-3 at South Florida's The Game Tournament (Feb. 20-22) ... the Great Danes defeated Rhode Island 12-0 (5 inns.) and South Florida 2-0 but fell to Eastern Michigan 0-8 (5 inns.), #25 Louisville 3-12 (5 inns.) and Jacksonville State 5-11 ... in the circle the Great Danes are led by Leah McIntosh, who is undefeated 5-0 and has a 0.26 ERA.
Falcons vs. Lady Govs • (3/8 • 10:00 a.m.)
The Falcons will wrap-up their stay in Atlanta, Georgia against Austin Peay ... the Lady Govs are currently 1-9 overall, after splitting a double-header against Kentucky Wesleyan 1-0 and 0-1 (Feb. 25) ... the Lady Govs are schedule to play Lipscomb in a double-header on March 4th before heading to the Buzz Classic ... the Lady Govs lead the Falcons 1-0 in the all-time series ... the only meeting between the Falcons and the Lady Govs took place in 2002 where BG fell 4-5 to Austin Peay.
THE HOME RUN RACE
Only seven games into the 2009 season the "Home Run Race" for senior Hayley Wiemer already started. Wiemer started the season with 23 career homers only three shy of tying the all-time BG career record. Wiemer crushed her first long ball of the season and 24th of her career in her first at-bat against North Dakota State (Feb. 27), now only two shy of tying the record and three away of becoming the new all-time career home run leader.
WIEMER NAMED MAC EAST PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Senior co-captain Hayley Wiemer, Sylvania, Ohio native was name Mid-American Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week (Feb. 17). Wiemer finished the Falcons' opening weekend fanning 19 batters in 20 innings of work with an ERA of 1.75 for a 2-2 record and one save. She opened the 2009 season (Feb. 13) from the circle for the Falcons shutting out North Florida (1-0) and striking out eight batters in her first complete game of the season. She picked up her second win of the day as she came in relief for the Falcons against Bradley, only giving up one hit in 4.2 innings of work. In her first two games Wiemer did not give up an earned run and only allowed six hits in 11.2 innings of work. On day two (Feb. 14) of the UCF-Early Bird Tournament she tied her career high 10 strikeouts against South Carolina, including fanning six straight batters in the third and fourth innings. Wiemer picked up her first save of the season in the Falcons, 3-2 win over University of Texas-Arlington.
FALCON BIG STICKS
The 2009 Falcons brought out their big sticks to open the season recording 28 hits, including two double-digit hit games in their opening weekend. The Falcons recorded 11 hits against Bradley, only two shy of last season's high (13) and 10 hits against University of Texas-Arlington. During the 2008 season the Falcons only recorded four double-digit hit games with `09 squad half way there in their opening weekend.
LINES THROWS FIRST CAREER WIN
Sophomore Zada Lines started her first career game from the mound for the Falcons against University of Texas-Arlington (Feb. 14) and eventually picked up her first career collegiate win, 3-2 over the Mavericks. Lines and the BG defense kept the Mavericks scoreless for six innings.
PROEHL A PRO AT THE PLATE
In her first weekend of collegiate softball freshman Rachel Proehl, proved to be a pro at the plate leading the Falcon offense with a .353 batting average going 6-for-17. Proehl recorded her first career hit in the season opener against North Florida (Feb. 13). She then came back in game two of the season against Bradley (Feb. 13) to record her first career multiple hit game going 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Proehl had her best game of the weekend as she led the BG offense going 3-for-4 against University of Texas-Arlington (Feb. 14), recording her second career multiple hit game and first career three hit game.
FALCONS HAVE A STRONG OPENING WEEKEND
The Falcons finished their 2009 opening weekend at the UCF-Early Bird Tournament with a 3-2 record, totaling 28 hits and a .239 batting average on the weekend. BG defeated North Florida (1-0), Bradley (8-6) and University of Texas-Arlington (3-2).
FALCONS SHUTOUT OSPREY AND DEFEAT THE BRAVES TO OPEN THE SEASON
Head coach Shannon Salsburg and the Falcons opened the 2009 season (Feb. 13) with a 1-0 shutout over University of North Florida followed by an 8-6 victory over Bradley. In their two games on opening day the Falcons totaled 16 hits, a season high 11 against Bradley and five against North Florida. Senior Hayley Wiemer recorded both of the Falcons' wins from the mound with an error free defense behind her.
