T.J. Blanton Named MAC Scholar-Athlete of Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University baseball student-athlete T.J. Blanton was named a co-recipient of the MAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Week award, the league office announced on Thursday afternoon (April 16). Blanton shared the award with Buffalo track & field athlete Jake Madonia.

Blanton (centerfielder, Jr., 3.33, health science, Sandusky, Ohio) hit .429 last week as the Falcons went 3-1, including a perfect 3-0 in MAC games. He had six hits in 14 at-bats, scoring a team-leading seven runs in the four games. Blanton scored a run in the Falcons' midweek game, a non-league contest versus Eastern Michigan.
Then, on the weekend, Blanton was 6-for-13 with six runs scored in the team's three-game sweep of Ball State at Steller Field. He went 1-for-2 with a run scored in the opener, a 3-2 win. In that game, Blanton had a bunt single and came around to score what would prove to be the winning run.
He had a hit and scored two runs in a 7-6 win in the second game against BSU, reaching on a fielder's choice, stealing second and scoring on a base hit in the sixth. Blanton also had a hit and scored another run in the eighth. He had three hits and scored three runs in the final game of the series, including a single and a run scored in the eighth inning. Then, in the 10th inning, Blanton led off with a single and scored on a walk-off homer in a 9-7 victory.
On the season, he is hitting .351 to rank fourth on the team. He has scored 25 runs, the second-highest total on the team. The Falcons are 16-14 overall and 7-4 in the MAC.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
The Falcons head to Kent State this weekend for a three-game series vs. the Golden Flashes.
