Gymnastics Celebrates a Successful 2009 Season

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University gymnastics head coach Kerrie Beach and the 2009 gymnastics team celebrated a successful 2009 season in their annual end of the season banquet (April 18).
Junior Breanne Guy was named the Most Valuable Gymnast, while red-shirt freshman Kasey Fillmore earned the Coach's Award and senior Jenna Wirtanen earned Most Improved. Also honored at the banquet were the Falcons' senior trio, Wirtanen, Katie Follett and Jholeen Ponce, all four-year letter winners.

Wirtanen, a Brookfield, Nova Scotia native, had finished her career as a Falcon on a high note as she set a career high on vault and matched her career best on floor this season. On the vault Wirtanen, posted to top-three finishes along with landing a career high 9.800 against Ohio State (Feb. 22) and at the Texas Women's University quad-meet (March 13). On the floor she ended her career and season with consecutive scores of 9.725 at the Texas Women's University quad-meet (March 13) and at the MAC Championships (March 21), matching her career best. As a senior Wirtanen also earned her first MAC Specialist of the Week honor as she had one of her best meets of the season against the Western Michigan (Feb. 13). Wirtanen vaulted to a second place finish as she stuck a 9.750 on the vault and tumbled her way to a 9.700.
As a team the Falcons finished the season 4-10 overall and 2-4 in the MAC, including a second place finish at the Texas Women's University quad-meet and a fourth place finish at the MAC Championships (192.425), recording the highest team finish and best team score since 2005. The Orange and Brown had their first full season of home meets in Anderson Arena and recorded a season best of 193.750 against state rival Ohio State (Feb. 22). In that same meet against Ohio State the Falcons were just shy of the all-time program team floor (49.425) score recording a 49.100 against the Buckeyes.
As the Falcons celebrated the conclusion of the 2009 season they also looked forward to what 2010 has in store for the program as Morgan Balzer, Amber Brewer and Fillmore were named tri-captains for next season.
