Gymnastics Celebrates a Successful 2009 Season

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University gymnastics head coach Kerrie Beach and the 2009 gymnastics team celebrated a successful 2009 season in their annual end of the season banquet (April 18).

Junior Breanne Guy was named the Most Valuable Gymnast, while red-shirt freshman Kasey Fillmore earned the Coach's Award and senior Jenna Wirtanen earned Most Improved. Also honored at the banquet were the Falcons' senior trio, Wirtanen, Katie Follett and Jholeen Ponce, all four-year letter winners.

Breanne Guy was named Most Valuable Gymnast

Guy, a Bradenton, Florida native qualified for her second straight appearance at the NCAA Central Region Championships and was named second team All-MAC for the second consecutive season after tying for third in the all-around and on the balance beams at the 2009 Mid-American Conference Championships. Guy had another strong season for the Falcons improving on her sophomore campaign as a Falcon. She improved at Regionals with a 38.825 and a 10th place finish in the all-around, just shy of qualifying for the NCAA National Championships, along with higher finishes in every event than the previous year. Guy not only finished in the top 10 of the 18 all-around competitors but posted the second best finish of any gymnast representing the Mid-American Conference. In her junior campaign Guy recorded 12 event wins and posted career highs in the all-around and in three of four events, matching her career high in the fourth event. She complied a career high 39.300 in the all-around against Ohio State (Feb. 22), the third best all-around score in program history. Guy set personal best on bars, beam and floor as she swung to a career high 9.825 on bars twice this season against Western Michigan (Feb. 13) and Central Michigan (Feb. 27), tying the eighth best score in program history, beamed her way to a career high 9.825 on beam against Kent State (Feb. 7) and tumbled to career high 9.875 on floor against Ohio State (Feb. 22), tying the eighth best score in BG history. To open the season Guy stuck a 9.875 on vault, tying her career high and the fourth best score in BG history. Guy was also named MAC Gymnast of the Week in back-to-back weeks this season (Feb. 17 & 24).

Kasey Fillmore earned the Coach's Award

Fillmore, a Danielson, Connecticut native had a strong come back this season after being sidelined last year due to an injury. Fillmore opened the season winning her first career event with a career high 9.750 on beam against Northern Illinois (Jan. 11). She went on to post eight top-three finishes, including career highs on every event she competed in. Fillmore swung her way to a 9.600 or better in seven of the 11 meets on uneven bars, including a career high 9.775 in back-to-back meets against Eastern Michigan (Feb. 1) and Kent State (Feb. 7). On the floor exercise Fillmore tumbled to a 9.625 or better in nine of the ten meets she competed in with a career high 9.825 against Ohio State (Feb. 22).

Wirtanen, a Brookfield, Nova Scotia native, had finished her career as a Falcon on a high note as she set a career high on vault and matched her career best on floor this season. On the vault Wirtanen, posted to top-three finishes along with landing a career high 9.800 against Ohio State (Feb. 22) and at the Texas Women's University quad-meet (March 13). On the floor she ended her career and season with consecutive scores of 9.725 at the Texas Women's University quad-meet (March 13) and at the MAC Championships (March 21), matching her career best. As a senior Wirtanen also earned her first MAC Specialist of the Week honor as she had one of her best meets of the season against the Western Michigan (Feb. 13). Wirtanen vaulted to a second place finish as she stuck a 9.750 on the vault and tumbled her way to a 9.700.

As a team the Falcons finished the season 4-10 overall and 2-4 in the MAC, including a second place finish at the Texas Women's University quad-meet and a fourth place finish at the MAC Championships (192.425), recording the highest team finish and best team score since 2005. The Orange and Brown had their first full season of home meets in Anderson Arena and recorded a season best of 193.750 against state rival Ohio State (Feb. 22). In that same meet against Ohio State the Falcons were just shy of the all-time program team floor (49.425) score recording a 49.100 against the Buckeyes.

As the Falcons celebrated the conclusion of the 2009 season they also looked forward to what 2010 has in store for the program as Morgan Balzer, Amber Brewer and Fillmore were named tri-captains for next season.
