DEKALB, Illinois - The Bowling Green State University softball team fell to Northern Illinois in a Saturday (April 4) afternoon double-header 7-6 and 9-6, despite tallying back-to-back games of double-digit hits, including a season high 13 hits in game two.
The Falcons totaled 23 hits on the day, recording 13 in game two alone their highest team mark of the season. Leading the BG offense on the day were Missy Bowman and Karmen Coffey each going 4-for-6. Three of Coffey's hits were extra base hits, including two triples and a double to go along with five RBIs and one run scored, while two of Bowman's hits were extra base hits as she came up with two doubles along with two runs scored and a RBI.
The Falcons will return to action at the Meserve Softball field next weekend as they host Ball State in a double-header Friday (April 10) at 1:00 p.m. The Falcons will then take on Mid-American Conference East division foe Miami in a two game series Saturday (April 11) at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday (April 12) at 1:00 p.m.
Huskies Squeak Past Falcons, 7-6
The Huskies squeaked past the Falcons, 7-6 in game one of the double-header as Northern Illinois rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to score three runs and win the game.
Both teams were kept scoreless in the first inning. The Huskies had two opportunities with runners in scoring position but the Hayley Wiemer and the Falcons were able to keep the Huskies from scoring.
The Falcon bats came alive in the second inning with back-to-back singles from Zada Lines and Susan Sontag to open the inning. Missy Bowman then earned a one out walk to load the bases for the Falcons. The Huskies were able to get the second out of the inning but Karmen Coffey came up big for the Falcons with a two out triple down the right field line to clear the basses and put the Falcons on the scoreboard, 3-0.
The Falcon defense was able to keep the Huskies scoreless in the bottom of the second, but the Huskies were able put up one run in the bottom of the third after a one out walk followed by two singles, making it a 3-1 game.
The Falcons answered right back scoring a run in the top of the fourth as Sontag led-off the Falcons with a single through the ride side. Melissa Bott then put down a sacrifice bunt to move Sontag into scoring position at second. The Huskies were able to get the second out of the inning but Katelynn Boso then singled to left field to drive home Sontag and make it a three run game once again, 4-1 in favor of BG.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth the Huskies were able to rally with three straight hits to score one run but the Falcons were able to end the inning before Northern Illinois could score again, 4-2.
Falcons struck once again in the top of the sixth scoring two runs off of four hits. Sontag sparked the Falcon bats with a one out triple to the left field warning track. Bott then drove her home with a hard hit through the left side of the infield, adding to the Falcons' lead 5-2. Bowman kept BG going with a seeing eye single to left field to put runners on first and second for the Falcons. The Huskies were able to get the second out of the inning but Coffey then earned a two out walk to load the bases for the Orange and Brown. Haleigh Bielstein kept the Falcons alive with a two out single through the left side of the infield to score another BG run, 6-2.
The Huskies once again came back in the bottom of the sixth to score two runs off of three hits to make it a 6-4 game.
In the top of the seventh Lines hit a one out double to center field but the Falcons weren't able to score heading into the bottom of the seventh up, 6-4.
The Huskies once again fired back at the Falcons as they were able to score three runs off of a Falcon error and two hits to win the game, 7-6.
Despite the loss the Falcon offense was hot recording 10 hits, their fifth double-digit hit game of the season. Leading the Falcon offense was Sontag going 3-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored. Lines also recorded a multiple hit game going 2-for-3 with a double.
Falcon Come Back Falls Short, 9-6
The Falcons never gave up in game two fighting back from a 9-1 deficit in the third inning but didn't have enough to overcome the Huskies falling, 9-6.
The Falcon bats started game two right were they left off in game one as Melissa West led-off the game for BG with a triple to left center. Karmen Coffey kept the offense going with a double to left field scoring West and giving the Falcons an early 1-0 lead.
The Huskies scored all of their runs in the first three innings. In the first inning they were able to score three runs on three hits and a walk, making it a 3-1 game. In the bottom of the second inning the Huskies were able to score five more runs off of two hits and three walks to make it an 8-1 game. Northern Illinois scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the third inning, making it a 9-1 game.
The Falcons were able to keep the Huskies scoreless the rest of the game in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, slowly chipping away at Northern Illinois' lead. In the top of the fourth inning the Falcons were able to get two runs back off of two hits and walk. Susan Sontag led-off for BG earning a walk. Then with one out Missy Bowman doubled to left center driving home Sontag, making it a 9-2 game. Haleigh Bielstein kept the Falcons going with a single up the middle to drive home Bowman, giving the Falcons another run 9-3.
The Falcon bats kept things going as they were able to score two more runs in the top of the fifth. Coffey led off the Falcons with a single through the left side. Hayley Wiemer then crushed her sixth homer of the season over the left field score board to give the Falcons two more runs, 9-5. Zada Lines was then robbed of single by the Huskies center fielder to get the first out of the inning. Sontag earned a one out walk which was followed up by a two out double to left center from Bowman but as the Falcons tried to score another run the Huskies were able to get the final out of the inning at home plate.
In the top of the sixth inning the Falcons put together a two out rally to score another run cutting the Huskies lead, 9-6. West sparked the Falcons with her second triple of the game to center field. Coffey followed up with her own triple down the right field line to score West, but that was all the Falcons were able to score in the sixth.
In the top of the seventh the Falcons continued to fight as Lines led-off the inning with a double to left center. The Falcons got their second base runner as Melissa Bott earned a one out walk but BG wasn't able to score falling 9-6 in game two.
Despite the loss the Falcon bats were on fire for the second straight game recording a season high 13 hits and their second straight game of double-digits on offense. The Falcons had four players record multiple hit games. Leading the Falcon attack were West, Bowman and Coffey each going 3-for-4. Two of West's three hits were triples to go along with two runs scored, two of Bowman's three this were doubles with one RBI and one run scored, while Coffey was only a homer shy of the cycle with two RBIs and one run scored. Also recording a multiple hit game was Wiemer with a home run, two RBIs and one run scored.
