BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Ball State Cardinals flew past the Bowling Green State University softball team in this afternoon's double-header (April 10), 7-1 in game one and 10-2 in game two. The Falcons fall to 7-20 overall and 2-6 in Mid-American Conference play.
The Falcon bats were kept under wrap this afternoon as they combined for six hits on the day.
The BG softball team will look to bounce back as they host Miami to open MAC East division play in a two game series Saturday (April 11) at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday (April 12) at 1:00 p.m.
Game one of the double-header was a close battle as the Falcons held Ball State to two runs and six hits in the first five innings, until the Cardinals broke everything open in the top of the sixth innings scoring five runs off of five hits and a Falcon error to take a 7-0 lead.
The Falcons pushed across their only run of game in the bottom of the seventh inning as Karmen Coffey singled to right field with one out. Then with two outs, Zada Lines kept the Falcons alive with a double to right center driving home Coffey. The Falcons weren't able to score again falling to the Cardinals 7-1 in game one.
The other Falcon hit came in the bottom of the fourth as Melissa West led off the BG offense with a line drive single to left field.
Hayley Wiemer started game one in the circle for the Falcons picking up the loss, now 5-15 overall and 2-4 in the MAC.
Rainy conditions turned game two of the double-header into a marathon as the game lasted over three hours due to an hour plus rain delay.
The Cardinals once again jumped out to an early lead scoring first as they pushed across a run in the top of the first inning and then put up seven runs off of three hits in top of the second to take an early 8-0 lead.
The Falcons answered back in the bottom of the second inning as Haleigh Bielstein sent a homer soaring over the left field fence, her first of the season, to put the Falcons on the scoreboard, 8-1.
As the Falcons were about the take the field in the top of the third inning the rainy weather put the game on an hour and ten minute rain delay. Finally as the rain subsided the Falcons were able to take the field for the top of the third inning. The Cardinals once again were able to score recording two runs off of three hits to extend their lead to 10-1.
The Falcons were able to keep the Cardinals scoreless in the top of the fourth and fifth.
In the bottom of the fourth the Falcon offense came alive as Susan Sontag led-off the inning with a double down the left field line. Missy Bowman kept things rolling as she traded places with Sontag knocking a double into left center to score Sontag and give the Falcons another run, 10-2.
The Falcons weren't able to score again and fell 10-2 in the five innings in game two to the Cardinals.
Sophomore Zada Lines started in the circle for the Falcons recording her first career MAC start, but ended up picking up the loss, moving to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the MAC.
