BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The grades have been calculated for the spring semester, and the Bowling Green State University women's basketball student-athletes were just as successful in the classroom as they were on the court in 2008-09.
On the hardwood, of course, the Falcons finished with a 29-5 overall record, the second-highest win total in school and Mid-American Conference history. BGSU won the MAC's regular-season title for the fifth consecutive season and advanced to the third round of the WNIT.
In the classroom, the team was just as successful. The team had a 3.46 grade-point average for the Spring 2009 semester, with five student-athletes -- Laura Bugher, Maribeth Giese, Lindsey Goldsberry, Maggie Hennegan and Jen Uhl -- earning a perfect 4.00 GPA in the spring.
In fact, Bugher, Giese and Hennegan each have a cumulative GPA of 4.00 at BGSU, while Goldsberry, the lone senior on the 2008-09 team, finished the spring semester with a stellar 3.86 cumulative GPA.
Of the 12 student-athletes slated to return in 2009-10, a total of 11 (91.6%) have a cumulative GPA of 3.13 or higher in their collegiate career. And, 11 of the 12 had a GPA of 3.40 or higher in the spring semester.
This information comes on the heels of numerous other academic successes this spring for the women's basketball Falcons. In April, co-captains Goldsberry and Tara Breske each were named to the Academic All-MAC Team, making BGSU one of just two schools with multiple selections to the team.
Then, a few weeks later, Goldsberry and Bugher picked up major awards at the Athletic Honors Banquet hosted by the BGSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Goldsberry was the female recipient of the Falcon Medal of Honor, while Bugher was the Falcon Club's female Junior Scholar-Athlete of the Year. No fewer than 12 student-athletes on the women's basketball roster were invited to the banquet, based on their cumulative GPA.
And, in mid-May, former BGSU women's basketball standout Whitney Taylor was chosen to speak at the College of Technology graduation ceremonies on the BGSU campus.
"I could not be more proud of our players," said Falcon head coach Curt Miller. "They are champions on the court, but they are also champions in the classroom.
"Out biggest goal every year is to be the hardest-working team in the MAC, in the classroom as well as on the court. I think our five MAC championships prove how hard our players work on the court. However, I think that fact sometimes overshadows how hard they work in the classroom as well. We have fantastic student-athletes, and they have had another incredibly successful year. Again, I could not be more proud of them."
