BGSU returns home for Saturday's Senior Day contest vs. NIU
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan University scored the final seven points of the first half to take a double-digit lead, and the Chippewas went on to a 77-65 over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team on Wednesday night (March 4). The Mid-American Conference matchup took place at McGuirk Arena.
Madi Morson had a game-high 29 points, pacing four players in double digits in the scoring column for the Chippewas (18-11, 12-6 MAC).
Junior Paige Kohler scored 16 points for the Falcons (16-13, 8-9 MAC), who saw a three-game winning streak come to an end. Sophomore Lauren Gerken had 11 points and junior Taya Ellis 10 for the Orange and Brown.
BGSU had a higher field-goal percentage on Wednesday night, shooting 42 percent from the floor to just 37% for the Chippewas. But, CMU went 8-of-14 from three-point range, while the Falcons were 5-for-20 from the arc. And, Central attempted 29 free throws, compared to 16 for BG.
Ellis had a team-high eight rebounds, and Ellis and freshman Ky'Aira Miller each had three steals for the Falcons, who played without sophomore Johnea Donahue on Wednesday night.
BGSU had a higher field-goal percentage than CMU in each of the four quarters.
FIRST QUARTER
• Taylor Anderson put the hosts on the board with a three-pointer, before Joniyah Bland-Fitzpatrick found Kaia Woods on a baseline drive for a layup, and Taya Ellis grabbed an offensive rebound and scored inside.
• The shot by Ellis would be the last field goal either team would make for a four-and-a-half-minute span. Central Michigan hit seven free throws in that time, before Madi Morson's triple gave the hosts a 10-0 run and a 13-4 lead.
• Lauren Gerken took an Emily Siesel pass and knocked down a three-point try to end BG's drought, beginning a 7-1 BGSU run to end the quarter. Both Paige Kohler and Jaedyn Cook went 2-for-2 at the free-throw line, with Cook's shots cutting the CMU lead to 14-11.
SECOND QUARTER
• BG got off to a quick start to the quarter, with five points in the first 31 seconds. Cook scored inside, and Ky'Aira Miller came up with a steal near midcourt, sailing in and hitting an 'and-one' layup. Miller's free throw gave BGSU a 16-14 lead.
• But, Jayda Mosley answered with a three-pointer that gave the Chippewas the lead for good. Mosley was 4-of-5 from the arc on the night. Lilah Turnbull knocked down a shot from nearly the same spot, but Gerken answered with a trifecta at the other end.
• Morson hit a second-chance jumper, then a pair of free throws, and after Ellis converted a layup, Ayanna-Sarai Darrington split two charity tosses before Mosley connected again to give her team a 28-21 lead midway through the quarter.
• Laila Harrison answered with a pull-up jumper, and Kohler answered a Demetria Prewitt layup with a three-pointer. But, Prewitt's three-point play restored Central's seven-point lead. Woods drove the length of the court, flashing past four Chippewas for a layup, and a pull-up jumper from Kohler cut the CMU lead to three, at 33-30.Â
• But, the hosts would end the half on a 7-0 run. A pair of free throws were followed by a Mosley triple, and when Morson grabbed a rebound and scored, CMU had a 40-30 lead at the break.
THIRD QUARTER
• For the second consecutive quarter, the Falcons started fast, as Kohler drained a step-back jumper on the first possession, and a Bland-Fitzpatrick steal led to an Ellis layup that cut the CMU lead to 40-34.
• Morson scored the game's next three points, but Woods came up with a steal and found Kohler for a transition layup. Moments later, Jasmine Fearne connected from the top of the arc to make it a 45-39 game with 6:40 left in the period, and Gerken's long two-pointer cut the Chippewas' lead to four.
• But, Morson hit a foul-line jumper, then a three-pointer, and a Mosley three-ball would give CMU a 53-42 lead with just under four minutes left in the period.
• Woods and Cook each scored in the paint, and Miller fed Gerken for a left-wing three, but the Chippewas were scoring at the other end, and a pair of Darrington free throws gave Central a 12-point advantage, 61-49, after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Two Anderson free throws began the fourth-quarter scoring, and gave the Chippewas a 63-49 lead. The Falcons could not cut the deficit to single digits over the remaining nine-plus minutes.
• The margin stayed between 10 and 14 points until a Morson layup put CMU up, 75-60, with 2:40 to go. Ellis responded with a three-point play, and after Anderson's jumper, Kendal Moxey closed the game's scoring in the final minute.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons return home to close the regular season on Saturday (March 7). BGSU will face Northern Illinois at the Stroh Center, with tipoff set for 2:00 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early, as Senior Day festivities will be held prior to the game.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will head to Cleveland for the Mid-American Conference Tournament, playing a quarterfinal-round game on Wednesday, March 11, at Rocket Arena. The Falcons' seed, opponent and start time will be determined following the completion of Saturday's games around the conference.
