Costa Rica: Day 7
August 18, 2009 | Women's Basketball
Greetings from the Cloud Forest! Tuesday (Aug. 18) was another incredible day for the BGSU women's basketball team in Costa Rica. The Falcons spent the day at Colinas del Poas, on a canopy (zip-line) excursion.

There were some nervous Falcons as the bus left the hotel for the trip. As we wound its way through the mountains, the team's amazing native tour guide, Melody, pointed out some sites that we passed during the trip, including a number of coffee plantations. For some of us, there is no way to hear about coffee for that long without actually having some coffee. Melody seemed to sense this, as she instructed Edgar, the bus driver, to stop at a roadside coffee shop/souvenir stand. Numerous T-shirts, caps, decaf mocha lattes (and at least one black coffee) later, the Falcons were once again on their way, this time to the canopy site.
The players, coaches and staff were fitted with their gear and received a few quick instructions, and suddenly, it was time to start. The number of nervous Falcons seemed to have grown, but all 21 members of the travel party met the challenge and successfully navigated the 12 zip lines. The last line was reportedly in the neighborhood of 600 meters long, and members of the travel party reached speeds of 55 kilometers per hour on that final trip through the Costa Rican wilderness.
The day marked yet another bonding experience for the Falcon veterans, and a milestone for those who had conquered their fears by sailing through the Costa Rican skies. The victorious group returned to the Colinas del Poas check-in point to return their gear, and it was time for lunch.
Perhaps it was the food, the exhilaration of having cheated death once again, or a combination of both, but the lunch was absolutely spectacular. Another two-hour bus ride awaited the group as they returned to the hotel. Several players, coaches and staff took advantage of some free time to explore the hiking paths and other amenities of the mountaintop paradise.
After another spectacular meal – dinner at the hotel – the team has a few free hours to spend in the hotel before bed. From the sounds of the noises emanating from the second-floor game room, it sounds like they are spending it there.
Check back Wednesday for further updates on Falcon fun. Hopefully, photo galleries from the final few days will be available on Thursday afternoon (from the Atlanta airport) or late evening (after the team returns to Northwest Ohio). Roll Along!
UPDATE: The photo gallery, with over 50 pictures, has now been added. Enjoy!
