The Season Begins: Falcons at Ohio State
August 21, 2009 | Women's Soccer
A running diary of the day's events
For Bowling Green State University athletics, the 2009-10 season begins in earnest on Friday night (Aug. 21), as the women's soccer team opens the year with a game against Ohio State. Mike Cihon is on the trip, and will post periodic updates on the trip.
1:45 p.m. -- The 2009-10 season is officially here. The women's soccer Falcons pulled out of Perry Stadium West on the way to Columbus. The Falcons' game tonight is the first competition of the academic year for a BGSU team. Head coach Andy Richards and his staff -- Scott Gloden, Tiffany Hansen and Brianne Eisenhard -- began practicing roughly a week and a half ago, and tonight will mark the first of many tough tests. As always, it's difficult to fathom how the summer flew by so quickly, but it's also exciting for the team to get things started.
2:53 p.m. -- The Lakefront bus is heading south on Route 23. Many of the players and coaches are catching a quick nap, while others are watching a movie, "Confessions of a Shopaholic." The players overwhelmingly chose this movie over their other choices of "Knowing" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," but I"m sure there will be plenty of time for another movie on the way home. Richards sent out a few updates on his Twitter account a little while ago, and now he is scribbling down some thoughts related to tonight's starting lineup. I'm sure he and the staff have a pretty good idea of their starting 11, but with a roster of 27, he has many possible combinations, rotation patterns, etc., that he can use.
3:48 p.m. -- I might be dreaming this, but I'm pretty sure the bus just made a quick detour so Richards and Gloden could stop at a flower shop and purchase some flowers. I might be dreaming this, but I never fell asleep, so I'm pretty sure it's actually happening.
5:30 p.m. -- The flowers were for the parents of Falcon freshman Emily Rothwell. The Rothwells recently moved from Tennessee to Lewis Center, Ohio, and hosted the team for their pregame meal. The Bannisters (parents of freshman Amie Bannister) co-hosted the event. The team had a great meal before heading off to Columbus.
5:35 p.m. -- Small crisis averted, as the bus nearly had to head under a relatively low bridge. There was no sign listing the height of the bridge, so the driver wisely headed in a different direction. The whole event probably only delayed BG's trip by five minutes, or five fewer minutes than it took to get some flowers before the meal.
5:57 p.m. -- The Falcons pull into the parking lot at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Good to see some BG parents already in the lot tailgating.
6:03 p.m. -- This stadium is the site of BGSU's first-ever NCAA Championships match, a 2-0 loss to the Buckeyes in 2004. The Falcons and Bucks also met here last year, battling to a 1-1 draw. BGSU's goal was scored by Brianne Eisenhard.
6:21 p.m. -- The live stats of tonight's game are scheduled to be available HERE. Currently, however, the OSU staff is endeavoring to make the stats link operational. If you are in the general area, the Buckeyes are offering free admission to their home soccer games this year, so hurry on over.
6:43 p.m. -- There are just under 38 minutes on the scoreboard clock, and the teams are taking the field for pregame warmups. The Falcons are in orange T-shirts and white shorts. When the game begins, the Falcons will be in their orange tops with white numerals, white shorts and orange socks.
7:23 p.m. -- Here's that starting lineup for the Falcons: Alexa Arsenault in goal; Kaitlyn Kobe, Alicia Almond, Samantha Bland and Leah Johnson from left to right along the back line; Kelsey Kovacs, Meagan Moran and Katie Stephenson in the midfield; and Megan Amann, Alyssa Zuccaro and Stacey Lucas along the front. If you're scoring at home, that's four sophomores, three juniors, a redshirt junior and three seniors in the starting 11.
7:33 p.m. -- And we're off! The Falcons are heading from your right to your left.
7:44 p.m. -- Possession time definitely has favored the Buckeyes through the first 12 minutes. OSU just had the game's first shot on goal, but it was right at Arsenault and she didn't even have to move to make the save.
7:48 p.m. -- I'm told the OSU folks are having trouble getting the live stats up and running. In the meantime, they are blogging just like I am. If you want to compare and contrast the blogs, you can check theirs out by clicking HERE.
7:49 p.m. -- The Bucks just had a flurry. Almond blocked a shot attempt, but the rebound went right to an OSU player at the top of the box. Her follow try hit the leg of a BG defender and trickled just wide of the right post. Off the ensuing corner kick, another shot try sailed high.
7:55 p.m. -- Arsenault comes off her line to make a great save, coming off her line to smother a shot attempt by the Buckeyes' Lauren Steuer. With 22 minutes left in the first half, we're still scoreless.
8:02 p.m. -- BGSU's first substitutions of the night come in the 30th minute. Jackie Tamerlano replaces Lucas, and Sarah VonderBrink becomes the first Falcon freshman to see action this year, checking in for Amann.
8:11 p.m. -- The game is still scoreless, with under seven minutes left in the half. But, BGSU has been unable to mount any kind of an offensive attack. The Falcons have not had any shot attempts or corner kicks yet. Jen Czapka is checking into the lineup, replacing Moran.
8:14 p.m. -- It's not scoreless any more, as the Buckeyes draw first blood. OSU's Danielle Scoliere slides a right-side cross to teammate Paige Maxwell, who hits a one-timer that nestles just inside the far (left) post. One-nil, OSU, with 4:39 left before halftime. Freshman Keely Chandler has entered the game for the Brown and Orange, replacing Zuccaro.
8:19 p.m. -- The Buckeyes take that 1-0 lead into the half.
8:25 p.m. -- Halftime totals favor the Buckeyes across the board. OSU has an 11-0 advantage in shots, including a 4-0 margin in shots on goal. The Bucks have all three of the game's corner kicks as well. Arsenault has made three saves for the Falcons, and has broken up several other OSU scoring opportunities.
8:37 p.m. -- We are underway once again, and the Buckeyes had another good scoring chance in the opening minute. Maxwell's header went just wide of the far post.
8:50 p.m. -- I neglected to mention that BGSU's second-half starters were the same 11 that started the match. It's still 1-0, OSU, with 31 minutes left in the second half. And, as I mention the starters, BG's lineup changes. Czapka and VonderBrink replace Moran and Lucas.
8:58 p.m. -- A grade-A scoring chance for the Buckeyes goes wide, as a player on the doorstep is unable to redirect a crossing pass on goal. Chandler is back into the lineup for the Buckeyes. As I typed that last sentence, an OSU pass sprung Maxwell free, but her shot from the left side was knocked out of play by Arsenault. The All-MAC First-Team 'keeper is playing very well.
9:02 p.m. -- OSU's Caitlyn Martin just rang a shot off the left post. The Falcons Katelyn Turner enters the game for the first time.
9:04 p.m. -- With 18 minutes left, the Buckeyes threaten again, taking several shots from close range. All came after Arsenault collided with an OSU player while trying to grab a corner kick. Still 1-0, Buckeyes.
9:05 p.m. -- The shots are coming fast and furious now. Arsenault just made a great save to rob Kayla Eckman.
9:07 p.m. -- Eckman scores to double the lead. She took a pass in the center of the box and was wide open. Arsenault can not be blamed for that goal, as Eckman could pick her corner. Two-nil, Bucks, with just under 16 minutes left.
9:10 p.m. -- BGSU's Turner steals the ball near midfield and sails in, pursued by three OSU defenders. She gets a shot off, but it sails high. That's BG's first shot attempt of the night.
9:19 p.m. -- Another nice save by Arsenault, charging out to thwart a chance by Maxwell. Arsenault now has eight saves on the evening, and has broken up several other dangerous chances. 2-0, OSU, with 3:35 left.
9:25 p.m. -- FINAL SCORE: Ohio State 2, Bowling Green 0. The Falcons had some offense in the game's waning minutes, but could not get a ball past OSU GK Lauren Robertson. Check back a little later tonight for a game recap, boxscore and play-by-play, right here at BGSUFalcons.com.
