The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team is in the midst of preparations for the 2009 season, the 13th campaign in program history. Members of the Falcon squad reported Monday (Aug. 10) afternoon for their first of several organizational meetings scheduled for the opening day. The team will kick things into high gear Tuesday (Aug. 11), with the 'Falcon Fitness Test' in the morning, followed by a pair of practices later that day.
Head coach Andy Richards begins his 10th season at the helm of the Falcons, and welcomes back a total of 19 letterwinners, including nine starters, from last year's team. The 2008 BGSU squad finished with an overall record of 12-6-4 (the fewest losses in school history) and placed fourth in the Mid-American Conference with a 6-3-2 league ledger. BG advanced to the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament.
This season, Richards and assistants Scott Gloden, Tiffany Hansen and Brianne Eisenhard have seven seniors, five juniors, seven sophomores and eight freshmen on the 27-player roster.
"The start of a new fall season brings with it an air of excitement and expectation," said Richards. "The coaching staff eagerly anticipates the coming together of experienced returners and enthusiastic newcomers. Both groups have quality in depth, and we are excited to watch them gel into a team Falcon soccer fans can be proud of. We are pleased to have everyone back in camp and ready to get going."
The Brown and Orange will open the 2009 season on Friday, August 21, with a match under the lights at Ohio State. The home portion of the regular season commences one week later -- Friday, August 28 -- with a 5:00 p.m. match against Indiana State at Cochrane Field.
