Richmond Strikes Early in 3-1 win over BGSU

The University of Richmond scored early in each half, riding that momentum to a 3-1 win over the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team Friday evening (Sept. 11). The match, the first in the Duquesne Invitational, was held at Rooney Field in Pittsburgh, Pa.

With the win, the Spiders improve to 1-2-0 on the young season, while dropping the Falcons to 1-3-0.
Richmond scored within the first five minutes of each half. Jed Antoun gave the Spiders a 1-0 lead with just 4:24 elapsed, before Falcon senior Cameron Hepple tied the match with under five minutes remaining in the period. Redshirt sophomore Max Weston picked up his first collegiate point with an assist on Hepple's goal.
But, only 4:51 after halftime, Jake Russell gave UR the lead for good. Kem Gardiner added an insurance goal at the 67:27 mark.
The Falcons lost despite holding an 18-12 advantage in shot attempts, including an 11-5 edge in shots on goal. BGSU also had eight corner kicks to the Spiders' two. All three totals -- shots, SOG and corners -- represented season-high marks for the Brown and Orange.
Brock Tomlinson made 10 saves -- five in each half -- to pick up the win in goal for Richmond. For the Falcons, redshirt freshman Jeff Smoker had two saves on the evening.
BGSU will return to Rooney Field Saturday night (Sept. 12), taking on host Duquesne University in a 7:30 p.m. match. DU scored late in the second half for a 1-0 win over Manhattan in Friday's second game.
