The Bowling Green State University football team surrendered 21 unanswered points to fall 27-20 versus Missouri in Columbia, Mo., in front of 65,401 on Saturday night.
BGSU (1-1) got on the scoreboard first as senior quarterback Tyler Sheehan led the Falcons on a 10 play 80 yard drive, capped by a 12-yard score from Sheehan to Ray Hutson in the first quarter. It was Hutson's first career touchdown.
Two plays following the BGSU score MU's Blaine Gabbert fumbled the ball as senior captain Cody Basler was bringing him down. Carlos Tipton recovered the fumbled and spotted the Falcons the ball at the MU 22-yardline. The Falcons could only gain three yards on as many plays but Jerry Phillips banged in a 37-yard field goal to spot the Orange and Brown a 10-0 lead and added a 32-yard kick early in the second quarter for a 13-0 Falcon advantage.
The Falcon defense, which played stellar throughout most of the game, held MU's Gabbert to a modest day connecting on 20 of 33 pass for 172 yards, keeping the Tigers out of the end zone for the entire first half. MU's only points came on field goals of 38 and 46 yards.
BGSU opened the second half with an 11 play, 73 yard drive, capped by a one-yard score from Willie Geter to give the Falcons a 20-6 lead with 9:44 remaining in the third quarter. Geter finished the day with 99 yards on the ground.
Missouri (2-0) would get one score late in the third quarter and two more in the fourth for the eventual 27-20 score.
Sheehan finished the night connecting on 29 of 46 passes for 206 yards and one score.
Senior P.J. Mahone led the Falcons with 13 tackles
Up next for the Falcons will be a trip to Huntington, Wv. for a showdown with former Mid-American Conference opponent, Marshall of Sept. 19.
Falcon Notes Versus Missouri
*The Falcons now own a 3-2 all-time series advantage over Missouri, but had their two game win streak snapped over the Tigers.
*Freddie Barnes had a game-high 10 catches and now has 25 receptions in his first two contests of 2009. The senior had only 40 catches in 2008.
*Geter had his third most productive game of his career, finishing with 99 yards on 20 carries. Geter had 202 yards versus Kent State in 2007 and 161 yards last season versus Toledo.
*With Tyrone Pronty suffering an injury last week versus Troy, someone had to step up and it looks like Chris Wright has grab the opportunity. The senior finished second on the team with seventh catches for 57 yards.
*P.J. Mahone led BGSU with 13 tackles, one shy of his career-high of 14, set versus EMU in 2008.
*Neal Dahlman and Carlos Tipton each recorded a fumble recovery, the first of their careers.
