Hayley Wiemer returns to the Softball program as Assistant Coach
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University softball program welcomes the addition of former Falcon pitcher, Hayley Wiemer, its new assistant coach for the 2010 season. Wiemer is the newest addition to the coaching staff, joining Head Coach Shannon Salsburg and Assistant Coach Lani Shaffer.
Wiemer began pitching for the Falcons in 2006 during which time she was named an All-MAC First-Team selection. During her first collegiate season Wiemer also earned the MAC Freshman of the Year award and was named to the MACs All-Freshman Team.
With immense success as a freshman, Wiemer spent the next three seasons as captain of the Falcon softball team.
In 2007, Wiemer shattered the single-season home run record with 11 homeruns on the season. She was BGSU's Most Valuable Player and co-Offensive Player of the Year. As a sophomore she earned a spot on the All-MAC First-Team and was a two-time MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week.
During the 2008 season, Wiemer was named to the All-MAC First-Team for the third consecutive season. She also earned a spot on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Great Lakes All-Region Second-Team for the second straight season. Wiemer continued earning national notoriety as she was awarded ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Third-Team and ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District First-Team honors.
In her final season playing for the Falcons, Wiemer continued her hot-streak as she earned Academic All-District First-Team and 2009 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV team honors. Among the BGSU records Wiemer holds is the BG homerun record, crushing 32 homers out of the park throughout her career. As if earning four MAC weekly honors was not enough, Wiemer was the only player to earn both Pitcher of the Week and Player of the Week. As a senior, she was the only MAC player to be named a Lowe's Senior CLASS Candidate, one of the top 30 senior softball players in the nation.
Wiemer put as much work into the classroom as she did on the field, boasting a 4.0 grade point average. In addition to her above-average work in the classroom and on the field, Wiemer was the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and won BGSU's scholar-athlete award in both 2008 and 2009. Wiemer graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies, concentrating in Biology.
