Falcons Complete Day-One Action at BGSU Invitational

No team scores are kept in the annual event, but BGSU singles competitors went a combined 9-6 on Saturday. The Falcons' doubles teams posted an overall 2-2 record in first-day play.
Four BGSU singles players were undefeated on Saturday. Junior Christine Chiricosta won a pair of matches at the top flight, defeating Cleveland State's Catrine Bjerrehus and Detroit's Carolina Salas Espinosa in a pair of straight-sets matches to advance to Sunday's flight championship. Chiricosta will face Akron's Zara Harutyunyan in that championship match.
At the fourth flight, senior Samantha Kintzel won a marathon match over Cincinnati's Jessica Wise, with the first and third sets of that match requiring tiebreakers. Due to the length of that match, Kintzel was the lone Falcon to play only one singles contest on Saturday. She will face Youngstown State's Anna Volkova in semifinal-round action on Sunday.
Sophomore Jessica Easdale, who missed nearly all of the 2008-09 season due to injury, picked up the first two wins of her Falcon career at the seventh flight. Easdale rallied from a 6-0 first-set loss to defeat UDM's Victoria Baca in three sets. Then, Easdale downed Xavier's Christie Pleiman in straight sets to set up a Sunday championship match with Eastern Michigan's Marcela Rivero.
And, at the eighth flight, Falcon freshman Jade Johnson picked up a pair of wins, losing a total of just seven games. Johnson downed IUPUI's Bailey Maryfield by scores of 6-2, 6-0, then topped YSU's Gretchen Cloern in straight sets. She will meet IPFW's Alex Forsyth in Sunday's flight championship.
Two other BGSU newcomers, Katelyn Grubb and Mary-Catherine Beck, split their two singles matches in their first action at the school. Grubb, a freshman, downed UDM's Erin Weldon in first-round action before losing to EMU's Celine Donnet at the sixth flight.
Beck, a transfer from Mount Union, lost only one total game in winning her Falcon debut against XU's Marietta Maffey at the ninth flight. Beck dropped a pair of closely-contested sets to UC's Abby Mayo in semifinal-round action.
In doubles, each of BGSU's four teams played one match on Saturday and will play two more on Sunday. Chiricosta teamed with freshman Maddy Eccleston for a convincing 8-0 win at the top flight, while senior Katia Babina and Grubb won by an identical 8-0 outcome at the second level.
With her three total wins on Saturday, Chiricosta has moved into the BGSU top-25 for career victories. She now has 88 combined career wins, and has moved past Lisa Maloney (87 from 2001-04) and Brenda Conley (87 from 1987-90) into 24th place on the school list. The Falcons' two seniors, Kintzel and Babina, rank 17th and 22nd, respectively, on that list.
