Bowling Green, Ohio - Boise State University exploded for 29 second-quarter points to break open a scoreless game, en route to a 49-14 win over the Bowling Green State University football team Saturday night (Sept. 26). The non-conference game was held at a sold-out Doyt L. Perry Stadium.
With the win, the nationally-ranked Broncos improved to 4-0 on the season, while the Falcons close non-league play with a record of 1-3.
After a scoreless first quarter, Boise got on the board on the first play of the second period, on an 18-yard run by Titus Young. Then, the Broncos scored two touchdowns within an 18-second span to take a 22-0 lead with 12:27 left before halftime.
Boise led by a 29-0 score at the intermission, and built the lead to 43-0 before the Falcons scored back-to-back touchdowns in the third quarter.
Falcon quarterback Tyler Sheehan found Adrian Hodges for a seven-yard score to get BG on the board midway through the period, and Sheehan scrambled for a six-yard TD of his own late in the quarter.
Boise State had 529 yards of total offense to the Falcons' 282.
BSU quarterback Kellen Moore completed 17-of-21 passes for 247 yards and a pair of scores. The Broncos had 267 rushing yards and 262 passing yards for the game. Doug Martin led the ground attack with 116 yards, while Jeremy Avery added 92. Both players had one rushing score.
Young had just two carries, but totalled 43 yards and scored on both runs.
For the Falcons, Sheehan was 16-of-29 for 137 yards, and Aaron Pankratz had 52 yards on five completions in 13 attempts.
Hodges led the Falcon receivers with six catches for 58 yards and the TD. BGSU possessed the ball for 34:11 to Boise's 24:51, but six of the Broncos' seven scoring drives took less than two minutes.
The Falcons now prepare for the Mid-American Conference opener. BGSU will host Ohio University next Saturday, Oct. 3, at 4:00 p.m. at Perry Stadium.
FALCON NOTES
* Boise State is the highest-ranked team ever to play in Doyt L. Perry Stadium ... the Broncos entered the game ranked No. 8 in the nation in both the Associated Press and USA Today polls this week ... prior to Saturday night, the last time a ranked opponent came to BG was on Oct. 25, 2003 ... on that date, the Falcons - who were also nationally ranked - defeated No. 12 Northern Illinois, 34-18.
* No fewer than six live broadcast media outlets were at The Doyt on Saturday night ... on the radio side, Todd Walker, John Gibson and the Falcon Radio Network called the game, as always ... WBGU-FM 88.1 broadcast as well, with Pat Dougherty and Kevin Zilch on the call ... Boise State had two radio stations make the trip, including a Spanish-speaking broadcast.
* On the television side, Greg Franke and Tom Cole called the game for BCSN in the Toledo area ... the game was shown on ESPN360.com as well ... ESPN360.com picked up the Boise State feed, provided by KTVB-TV.
* Saturday's game marked the third time the Falcons and Broncos have met, but the first time they have played in BG ... in fact, it marked Boise State's first-ever trip to the state of Ohio ... the teams had met twice in Boise, with the Broncos picking up wins by the scores of 48-20 in 2005 and 20-7 last season.
