BGSU picks up first dual-match win of young season
The Bowling Green State University tennis team picked up its first dual-match win of the 2009-10 campaign with a 6-1 win over Morehead State University Sunday (Jan. 17). The non-conference, neutral-site match was held at Louisville's Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 1-1 in dual matches this year to date, while dropping the Eagles to 0-1.
For the second-straight day, junior Christine Chiricosta was a winner at both the top singles and the number-one doubles flight. She teamed with freshman Maddy Eccleston for an 8-3 win in doubles action, and lost only two total games in a straight-sets singles sweep of MSU's Alexandra Rydberg.
The Brown and Orange swept the doubles point, as senior Katia Babina and freshman Jade Johnson outlasted their Eagle foes for an 8-7 win at the second flight. Senior Samantha Kintzel and sophomore Jessica Easdale won an 8-4 verdict in third-flight action.
In singles play, the Falcons took five of the six matches, including a 3-0 mark by BG's three freshmen at the fourth through sixth flights. Eccleston dropped only three total games in a win over MSU's Lauren Delaney at the fourth flight, while Johnson and Katie Grubb won by identical 6-1, 6-4 scores at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.
Kintzel also captured a singles victory, downing Kayla Tuscany in a narrow, 7-5, first set, then picking up a 6-0 sweep in second-set action at the third flight.
The Falcons now will prepare for next weekend's trip to Cincinnati. Head coach Penny Dean's squad will take on Cincinnati in Saturday (Jan. 23) action, before meeting Xavier on Sunday (Jan. 24). BGSU's first 'home' dual match comes on Jan. 30, when the Brown and Orange host IPFW at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
