DAY ONE RESULTS
Bowling Green State University sophomore golfer Susy Grunden earned her first career medalist finish at the 2009 Zippy Invitational. At this year's edition of the event, Grunden enters the final round poised to make a run at defending the title.
In making her run at back-to-back Zippy Invitational championships, Grunden carded two of the day's 15 best rounds. Over the first 18 holes, Grunden scored 74, then responded with a 77 over the second 18 for a 36-hole total of 151.
Grunden trails only Sarah Hoffman of Grand Valley State, who posted a 149 for the day.
High scores ruled the day on the par-72, 6,025 yard course at the Rosemont Country Club in Fairlawn, Ohio. Nobody scored par or better during Monday's play, and only eight of the 71 players in the tournament field managed to play both rounds under 80.
Senior co-captain Lauren Glew scored an 80 in the second round and enters the second day in a tie for 38th place with a total of 168. Freshman Bailey Arnold is only two shots behind Glew after securing an 83 during the day's final round.
Amy Ruthenberg's 173 (85-88) and Paula DiFrancesco's 179 (88-91) rounded out the action for the Falcons' five-player contingent.
As a team, the Orange and Brown will start the second day in ninth place. The team earned a total of 334 in the first round but improved by six strokes in the second round. Bowling Green's total of 662 is one shot ahead of Eastern Kentucky, seven ahead of Allegheny College and ten ahead of Cleveland State.
The University of Akron, hosts of the tournament, ran away with the lead on the first day; their total of 622 leads second place Grand Valley State by 14 shots. Bucknell is the only other team within 20 shots of the lead.
Fellow Mid-American Conference school Ohio University is fourth after a first-day 643.
The final round commences on Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
