The Bowling Green State University women's golf team could not avoid the rash of high scores on the final day of the 2010 Zippy Invitational, and after the third round of 18 holes at the Rosemont Country Club in Fairlawn, Ohio, the Falcons found themselves in ninth place.
During Tuesday's play at the par-72 course covering 6,025 yards, only two out of 12 teams managed scores better than 328. This strongly contrasted with Monday's play, in which the 12 teams combined for 14 such rounds out of the 24 total rounds played.
Unfortunately for the Falcons, they were not one of those two teams. After improving from 334 to 328 between the first and second rounds, Bowling Green fell back slightly to register another 334 on Tuesday. The score gave the team a tournament total of 996, which placed them ahead of Eastern Kentucky, Cleveland State and Allegheny College.
The Falcons finished five shots behind Marshall and California (Pa.), who tied for seventh place.
The tournament hosts, Akron, were the champions at the third annual installment of this event. Their two-day total of 950 bettered that of second-place Grand Valley State by four strokes. Bucknell finished in third, 19 strokes behind the Zips. Fellow Mid-American Conference opponent Ohio University placed fifth.
Individually, sophomore Susy Grunden fell short of successfully defending her 2009 championship at the Zippy Invitational. However, she finished very near the top of the leaderboard. In fact, her 54-hole score of 232 (74-77-81) tied for third place. Grunden was one of only four players to finish fewer than ten shots behind the tournament winner, and her score was only six shots off the winning pace.
The third place finish marks the third time in this season's four tournaments that Grunden has placed third or better.
In all, Grunden's 15 tournament career features four top-three finishes. She has placed in a tournament's top five a total of five times and in the top ten a total of seven times.
Senior Lauren Glew carded a final round of 82 and ended the tournament alone in 31st place. Glew scored 250 (88-80-82) over the tournament's 54 holes.
Bailey Arnold posted a composite 258 over the two days in Fairlawn; her score included a second round 83.
Junior Paula DiFrancesco also registered an 83 during the tournament; her low round occurred on Tuesday and marked an eight-shot improvement over the second round.
DiFrancesco's tournament total of 262 matched that of sophomore Amy Ruthenberg (85-88-89). Each tied for 55th place.
Bowling Green completes their five-tournament fall schedule next Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 18-19) when they travel to Nashport, Ohio for the Duramed MAC Preview.
