BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The three-time Mid-American Conference East Division Champion Bowling Green baseball team has released its schedule for the 2011 season. The schedule includes two weekend out-of-conference trips to the state of Kentucky, a rematch with the University of Michigan, nine games with five different in-state schools and the Falcons' annual Spring Break trip to Winter Haven, Florida.
The Falcons' schedule includes nine series (27 games) counting towards the MAC standings and an additional three games with conference opponents that will be played on weekdays, counting toward non-conference play.
Highlighted games on the BGSU schedule include two with Big Ten institutions in April. On April 12 the Falcons will head north up I-75 to play the Michigan Wolverines in a rematch of last year's clash. Nearly a week later on April 20 Bowling Green will travel south into Buckeye territory to play Ohio State University under the lights at 6:35 p.m.
Bowling Green will begin the season on February 18 when the team visits the southern-most Bowling Green (Kentucky) to play Western Kentucky University for a three-game weekend series. The following weekend (Feb. 25-27) BGSU will return to the Bluegrass State to play three with Murray State University.
The Brown and Orange will open up their home schedule against the University of Northwestern Ohio (Lima, Ohio) on March 16. It's first MAC action at Warren Steller Field is set to begin on April 1 against Eastern Michigan University. The Falcons will also host Toledo (April 15-17), Ohio (April 22-24) and Kent State (May 13-15) in Mid-American Conference play this season.
Bowling Green will begin their road conference stretch in DeKalb, Ill. to play Northern Illinois University (March 23-25). They will travel to Ball State (April 5-7), Miami (April 29–May 1), Akron (May 6-8) and close out MAC play against Buffalo (May 19-21) before heading into the conference tournament.
Bowling Green will set sail to Winter Haven, Fla. for its annual Spring Break trip with games over a ten-day span from March 5-15. The team will participate in the annual RussMatt Invitational for the third straight year. Teams that the Falcons' will play has not been finalized as of yet. More details about the tournament will be provided as they become available.
The Falcons return to the diamond 17 letterwinners from last year's team while welcoming one of the largest freshman classes in program history with 14 new players joining the team. The Falcons also return All-MAC LHP Matt Malewitz from an injury that kept him out of action last year.
The team closed the 2010 season by wrapping up their school-record third consecutive MAC East title and finished 2010 with a 31-23-1 overall record. The Falcons started the season 9-17-1 through mid-April but turned their season around with help from an 11-game win streak from April 16-May 1. Bowling Green finished their final 21 games before the MAC Tournament with an 18-3 record, including a near-perfect 10-1 mark at home in that time.
