Scott Thomas Named Preseason All-MAC; Falcons Picked Fifth
October 28, 2010 | Men's Basketball
Cleveland, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the Eastern Division in the 2010-11 MAC Men's Basketball Preseason Poll and junior forward Scott Thomas was named to the East Division Preseason All-MAC Team.
Bowling Green went 14-16 a year ago and finished 6-10 in the MAC, placing sixth in the Eastern Division. That came just one year after the Falcons won the regular season MAC crown and earned a bid to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).
Head coach Louis Orr is beginning his fourth season at the helm of the BGSU men's basketball program and he has a cast of eight returners and six newcomers. The Falcons return Thomas, the team's leading scorer from a year ago, along with one of the most experienced and veteran backcourts in the conference. Junior shooting guard Dee Brown started 29 games a year ago and senior point guard Joe Jakubowski is one of the most experienced players in the country at his position with 85 career starts under his belt.
Ohio was selected to win the division and received half of the 24 first-place votes. Kent State was picked second with eight first-place votes and Akron was third with the remaining four first-place votes. Miami was fourth and Buffalo was picked last. In the Western Division, Ball State was selected to win the division, followed by Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Northern Illinois, and Toledo.
Thomas joins Akron's Brett McKnight, Kent State's Justin Greene, Miami's Julian Mavunga, and Ohio's D.J. Cooper on the Preseason All-MAC Team for the Eastern Division. In the Western Division, Ball State's Jarrod Jones, Central Michigan's Trey Zeigler, Eastern Michigan's Brandon Bowdry, Northern Illinois' Xavier Silas, and Western Michigan's Flenard Whitfield were named Preseason All-MAC.
A year ago, Thomas was named honorable mention All-MAC after leading Bowling Green in scoring and steals, while ranking second in assists, rebounds, and blocked shots. He went to the free-throw line more than any other player and started all 30 games despite battling through an injury late in the year. He averaged 13.2 points during the season but improved to 15.4 points in conference games and averaged 16.9 points over the final eight games of the year. In the MAC Tournament game at Western Michigan, Thomas scored 23 points, making 3-of-4 three-pointers, and added four rebounds and a blocked shot.
Bowling Green's season gets under way with a home exhibition game Nov. 6 against Adrian at 2 p.m. The Falcons will then open the season on the road at Howard Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. before returning home to host Ohio Dominican in the regular season home opener Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. The season marks the final one in Anderson Arena as the team will move into the Stroh Center for the 2011-12 campaign.
