Under new head coach Petra Martin, the Bowling Green State University swimming team has created a rousing start to the 2010-11 season, and that continued today (Oct. 30) at Cooper Pool with a 160-134 defeat of Akron in the Mid-American Conference debut for both teams.
The Falcons (1-0, 1-0 MAC) avenged their 2009-10 loss to Akron (0-4, 0-1 MAC) by winning ten of the day's 14 swimming events. In last year's meet, the Zips defeated BGSU in the final MAC meet of the season, 183-111.
Junior Vicky Yu participated in four of those ten victories. Yu won both the 100 and 200 yard butterfly and was part of the winning relay teams in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle.
Yu won by a full second over teammate Sarah Burston and by nearly two seconds over the closest Akron competitor in the 100 butterfly. In the 200 yard event, Yu won by 3.5 seconds over Catherine Carr of Akron.
Sophomore Emily Bennet also competed in four of the Falcons' ten wins. Like Yu, Bennet took part in both relay victories and also won the 100 and 200 yard freestyle races.
In the 100-yard event, Katie Miles of Akron was leading at the halfway point, but Bennet surged at the end to win by 13 one-hundredths of a second. The 200-yard event was even closer. Bennet fell behind Akron's Becca Zimmer early and trailed throughout the first 150 yards. Again, she surged and emerged victorious -- by just three one-hundredths of a second (1:52.75 to 1:52.78).
Along with freshman Brittany Szekely, Yu and Bennet led the relay teams to victory. In the 400 free relay, Bennet once again erased a late deficit to help the team win by one second. In the 200 medley relay, the team led throughout and won by well over two seconds.
Sophomore Alexis Kain was part of the 200 medley team and also swept the breaststroke events. In the 100 yard version, Kain beat teammate Amanda Rom by two seconds and finished four seconds ahead of the closest Zips swimmer. In the 200, Kain led a trio of Falcons that swept the top three spots. The closest Akron swimmer was five seconds behind Kain.
Kain's time of 2:23.50 in the 200 is also a personal record.
Other Falcon winners included Megan Bomicino in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:41.06), winning by nearly nine seconds, and Alexa Harris in the 200 yard backstroke (2:07.05).
bowling Green's next meet is next Saturday (Nov. 6) when they travel to Athens, Ohio to meet the Bobcats of Ohio University. BGSU defeated Ohio last year at Cooper Pool.
