The Bowling Green State University swimming team won six of the day's 14 swimming events but ultimately fell to Ohio University, 173-119, in a meet today (Nov. 6) in Athens, Ohio.
For the second consecutive meet, junior Vicky Yu swept the butterfly events for the Falcons (1-1; 1-1 MAC). Yu (57.04) and Sarah Burston took the top two spots in the 100 butterfly, and BGSU claimed three of the top four spots overall. The closest Bobcat was 2.22 seconds behind Yu.
In the 200 yard butterfly, Yu (2:05.49) defeated Ohio's Amanda Cecere by 2.06 seconds. Burston and freshman Kristina Roop again helped the Falcons claim three of the top four spots in the event.
Like Yu in the butterfly, ophomore Alexis Kain swept the two breaststroke events. Kain defeated her nearest Ohio foe by 3.3 seconds as she finished the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.97. Junior Amanda Rom (1:06.97) finished second for the Falcons.
In the 200 yard event, Kain finished in 2:21.07, defeating Ohio's Petra Chomicz by nearly two seconds. Katie Womack (2:29.73) joined Amanda Rom in helping the Falcons again take three of the top four places in the race.
The Falcons' other winner in an individual race was sophomore Emily Bennet. Unlike last week, when Bennet had to come from behind for her victories, she led throughout the 200 freestyle race. Bennet finished the distance in 1:04.60, winning by 1.8 seconds.
Bowling Green also won one of the day's two relay races. Emily Bennet, Brittany Szekely, Carrie Enright and Sarah Reinink combined to finish in 1:36.58 and win the 200 yard freestyle relay. Enright led the group with a 24.04 time in her 50 yard split.
In the seven individual events the Falcons did not capture, they placed second in three. Alexa Harris (0:59.54) took second in the 100 backstroke, while Emily Bennet (0;52.57) did so in the 100 freestyle race. Sarah Burston was the runner-up in the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.52.
Bowling Green's next action in the pool will be next Saturday (Nov. 13) when the Falcons travel to Youngstown, Ohio to face the Penguins of Youngstown State.
