BGSU heads to IPFW Wednesday, hosts Buffalo Saturday afternoon
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team plays a pair of games this week, stepping outside of Mid-American Conference play for a midweek match before returning to league competition this weekend ... the Falcons of head coach Eric Nichols will travel to Fort Wayne, Ind., for a Wednesday (Oct. 6) game against IPFW ... kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Hefner Soccer Stadium ... then, the Falcons will return to Northwest Ohio for a Saturday (Oct. 9) contest vs. the University at Buffalo ... that match will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field.

As part of BGSU's Centennial celebration, admission to all BGSU home soccer matches in the 2010 regular season will be free.
SATURDAY'S PROMOTIONS
There will be a number of promotions and events surrounding Saturday's (Oct. 9) game vs. Buffalo ... the first 300 fans will receive free thunderstix ... additionally, the Falcons will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Appreciation Day, as part of National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 to Oct. 15) ... the events will include a hog roast at approximately 11:00 a.m.

LAST WEEK
Western Michigan scored twice in a four-minute span in the second half en route to a 2-0 win over the Falcons Friday afternoon (Oct. 1) ... the match was BGSU's lone action of the week ... the Broncos got goals from Darren Jones and Pat Schiffer, with Jones finding the net in the 59th minute and Schiffer scoring in the 63rd minute of play ... Bronco goalkeeper Sean Lewis made three saves to earn the shutout ... at the other end of the pitch, junior Miguel Rosales made three stops for the Brown and Orange ... each team had 12 shot attempts on the day.
WEDNESDAY WARRIORS
Beginning with the trip to IPFW, the Falcons will play a game on each of the next five Wednesdays ... BGSU has a record of 2-0-0 in Wednesday games this year to date, with a 1-0 win at Detroit (Sept. 15) and a 3-0 home victory against Wright State (Sept. 22).
ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons will enter Wednesday's IPFW match with an overall record of 2-4-2, and BGSU is 0-1-0 in Mid-American Conference action ... BG's wins have come at Detroit (1-0; Sept. 15) and against Wright State (3-0; Sept. 22), and the Falcons' two ties were against Appalachian State (0-0; Sept. 3) and host Davidson (2-2; Sept. 5) in the Davidson adidas Classic on the season's opening weekend ... for the Brown and Orange, the losses have come against top-ranked Akron, Valparaiso, Lipscomb and Western Michigan, all by 2-0 scores ... junior Max Weston leads the team with eight points, having been involved in the scoring of five of BGSU's six goals this season ... Weston leads the Falcons in goals, with three, and has two assists to tie for the team lead ... four teammates have two points apiece ... senior tri-captain Dusko Topolic, junior Colin Armstrong and freshman Zach Schewee each have scored one goal this year to date, while junior Chris Jurtovski has two assists ... junior Miguel Rosales has played all 760 minutes in goal, and has three shutouts, a MAC-leading 38 saves and a goals-against average of 1.18 ... Schewee has played 757 of the 760 minutes over the first eight matches, as has junior tri-captain Tanner Fink ... freshman Brandon Silva has played 748 total minutes and senior tri-captain Thomas McLean 747 ... Falcon coach Eric Nichols is in his second season at the BG helm ... Nichols and assistant coach Paul Habrecht welcomed back a total of 14 letterwinners, including seven starters, from last year's club ... the 2009 Falcons went 3-12-3 overall and posted a MAC mark of 2-3-1, placing fifth in the league standings ... BG scored a total of 21 goals last season, and the departed players combined to score 17 of them ... the Falcons' top-two scorers last season were the graduated Cameron Hepple (10 goals, 21 points) and Jacob Lawrence (five goals, 13 points) ... the Falcons have 12 newcomers on the 2010 team ... junior Byard Ebling is the top returning scorer, having recorded two goals and five points last season ... the only other players on the 2010 roster who scored in '09 are juniors Jurtovski and Weston, who had one goal apiece ... in goal, the lone returning 'keeper is sophomore Dylan Schoettley ... he played in 10 matches a year ago, starting the final seven ... Schoettley had 44 saves and a GAA of 2.27 in 2009 ... Rosales is in his first season at BGSU after transferring from the Univ. of Cincinnati.
FALCON COACH ERIC NICHOLS
BGSU coach Eric Nichols is in his second season at the Falcon helm ... he was hired on Feb. 17, 2009, and is just the fifth head coach in the 46-year history of the program ... Nichols came to BGSU after spending the 2008 season as assistant coach at Davidson College ... he had a successful debut to his BGSU head-coaching career, as the Falcons defeated Marshall, 2-0, in the 2009 regular-season opener, and picked up his first MAC victory at Buffalo ... Nichols has a 5-16-5 record at the helm of the men's soccer Falcons, and is 64-38-6 overall in his sixth season as a collegiate head coach ... prior to his stint at Davidson, Nichols was the head men's soccer coach at Ohio Dominican for four seasons (2004-07) ... under his guidance, the Panthers recorded a 59-22-1 (.728) record, including a final ranking of fourth in 2007 ... that team advanced all the way to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament ... Nichols served as an assistant coach at Ohio Wesleyan for four seasons ... he played collegiately at Ohio State, and also played five years of professional soccer for several teams, including the Columbus Xoggz and Indiana Blast of the USISL ... Nichols is joined on the BGSU staff by assistant coach Paul Habrecht and director of operations Alma-Lynn Dupont in 2010.
THE MASTODONS / THE BGSU-IPFW SERIES
IPFW currently has an overall record of 2-8-0, and the Mastodons are 0-1-0 in Summit League play ... the 'Dons are 2-1-0 at home this season to date, with wins over Eastern Illinois (1-0 in OT; Sept. 10) and Milwaukee (1-0; Sept. 14) at Hefner Soccer Complex ... the team's home loss was also the lone conference match so far, a 4-0 loss to Oakland on Sept. 24 ... IPFW has played one match since that time, a 2-1 loss at Bradley on Friday (Oct. 1) ... the 'Dons are looking to snap a four-match losing streak ... the team's Sunday (Oct. 3) home game vs. Alabama A&M was cancelled ... Max Touloute has scored five of the team's 10 goals to date, and has a total of 11 points ... Andy Masteller has a pair of goals, while Jorge Ramirez has four points to tie Masteller for second on the team in scoring ... Ramirez leads the Mastodons with two assists ... in goal, Donovan Dowling has played all but 30 minutes ... he has 44 saves, two shutouts and a goals-against average of 2.41 ... head coach Mike Harper welcomed back 16 letterwinners, including nine starters, from last year's club that went 6-11-2 overall and 2-4-0 in Summit League play ... The Falcons lead IPFW, 4-3-2, in the all-time series between the teams, and BGSU is unbeaten in the last three meetings ... Wednesday's game will mark the ninth consecutive year the schools have played ... the Falcons have a record of 2-1-0 in games played in Fort Wayne, but the 'Dons won a 2-1 decision the last time the teams played at IPFW, four years ago (Oct. 22, 2006) ... the teams have played three times in BG since then, with the Falcons going 1-0-2 ... last year, the Falcons and Mastodons battled to a 1-1, double-overtime draw ... the 'Dons were a MAC affiliate member for men's soccer in the 2005 and 2006 seasons.
THE BULLS / THE BGSU-BUFFALO SERIES
Buffalo has a record of 4-5-1, and the Bulls are 1-0-0 in MAC play ... UB is idle until Saturday's game at BGSU ... the Bulls played three matches last week, with a win, a loss and a tie ... UB opened MAC play with a 1-0 win at Hartwick on Monday (Sept. 27) ... the Bulls dropped a 3-2 decision at Niagara Friday (Oct. 1), before playing Duquesne to a 1-1 draw in Buffalo on Sunday (Oct. 3) ... the Bulls have a record of 2-3-0 in road games ... individually, Juha Kaartoluoma, Andy Tiedt, Mike Unwin each have four points on the year ... Kaartoluoma and Tiedt have two goals apiece to tie for the team lead, while Unwin paces UB with a pair of assists ... in goal, Nick Fetterman has started seven of the 10 matches, and has 24 saves and a GAA of 2.05 ... head coach John Astudillo is in his 22nd season at UB ... the Bulls went 7-9-1 overall and 2-4-0 in MAC play a season ago ... The Falcons lead Buffalo, 8-6-0, in that series, and BGSU won last year's meeting ... the Brown and Orange picked up a 4-3 victory on the road last season (Oct. 16, 2009) ... that win snapped a five-game series winning streak for the Bulls ... BG has scored a total of 22 goals and allowed 20 in the series ... UB captured the teams' first-ever matchup in 1998, and the Falcons then reeled off seven-straight wins over the Bulls from 1999 to 2003 ... the last six wins in that streak were shutouts ... but, UB has scored multiple goals in each of the last six games vs. the Brown and Orange ... the Falcons are 2-4-0 in home games, 5-2-0 in road games and 1-0-0 in neutral-site meetings with the Bulls ... seven of the 14 meetings have required overtime.

• The Falcons and IPFW have two common opponents, having both played Wright State and Western Michigan ... BGSU is 1-1-0 vs. those teams, with a 3-0 victory vs. the Raiders (Sept. 22) and a 2-0 loss to the Broncos (Oct. 1) ... the 'Dons dropped a 4-3, double-OT match at WSU (Sept. 5), and fell at WMU by a 4-2 count (Sept. 12).
• BGSU and Buffalo have not played any common opponents this season to date.
MAX POWER
Guys named Max could play a key role in Wednesday's match at IPFW ... BGSU's Max Weston and IPFW's Max Touloute have combined to play a part in 11 of their teams' 16 goals this year to date ... Weston, BG's top scorer with eight points, has been involved in the scoring of five of the Falcons' six goals ... Touloute, with five goals and an assist, has figured in the scoring of six of the 'Dons' 10 goals this fall.
FALCONS ON THE ROAD
• BGSU's win at Detroit (Sept. 15) enabled the Falcons to match the road win total for all of last season ... heading into the IPFW match, BG is now 1-1-1 in road games this year to date ... the Falcons went 1-6-1 in true road contests in 2009.
• The Falcons have a record of 1-1-2 in all matches away from home (road and neutral-site games combined) ... last year, BGSU was 1-8-1 in such games.
FOND MEMORIES
Falcon senior tri-captain Thomas McLean, primarily a defender during his career, has scored five goals at BG ... two of those goals have come in games against this week's opponents ... McLean scored a goal at Buffalo in his freshman season (Sept. 28, 2007), and put an exclamation point on a 2-0 win over IPFW at Cochrane Field in his sophomore year (Sept. 19, 2008) ... vs. the Dons, he picked up a loose ball and blasted a shot from 30 yards out.

Freshman Sean Sikich made his collegiate debut in Friday's (Oct. 1) WMU match ... Sikich saw seven minutes of action off the bench • junior goalkeeper Miguel Rosales and his defenders posted three shutouts in the first six games of the year, matching the total for all of last season (three shutouts in 18 matches in 2009) • Rosales is the first BGSU 'keeper to post three clean sheets in a season since Paul Shoemaker in 2007 ... no Falcon goalie has had more than three shutouts since David DeGraff had five in the 2003 season • Wednesday's IPFW game marks the Falcons' second contest in the state of Indiana this year ... BGSU makes a total of four trips to the Hoosier state in 2010 ... the Brown and Orange played at Valparaiso (Sept. 19), and will face Butler (Oct. 13) and IUPUI (Nov. 3), in addition to the Mastodons • senior Dusko Topolic's goal, just 2:37 into the Wright State match, was the Falcons' earliest goal in a match since Nov. 2, 2007.
