2011 BGSU Softball Schedule
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University softball coach Shannon Salsburg announced the program's 2011 schedule Wednesday morning. The Falcons will play in four pre-conference tournaments and are slated to play 23 consecutive road games before hosting Kent State April 1 to open Mid-American Conference action.
Bowling Green will open the year with five games in the LSU Tiger Classic Feb. 11-13 and will have almost two weeks off before playing five more contests in the Phyllis Rafter Memorial, hosted by Kennesaw State, Feb. 25-27. The team will then compete in the Comfort Inn Softball Classic, hosted by Morehead State, March 5-6 and will follow that up with five non-conference games in the states of Kentucky and Tennessee. Bowling Green will then compete in the Springhill Suites Buckhead Classic, hosted by Georgia Tech, on March 11-12 and will finish out the season-opening road trip with a game at Michigan March 30.
Following the Michigan game, Bowling Green will play on Meserve Softball Field to open MAC play April 1 against Kent State. That will start the Falcons' 24-game league schedule with three non-conference doubleheaders sprinkled in at Notre Dame (April 12), and at home against Detroit (April 20) and IPFW (April 26). The IPFW doubleheader will start a stretch of 10 consecutive home games to end the season, concluding with a pair of games against Akron on May 7-8. The MAC Tournament will take place May 11-14 in Akron.
The stretch of 23 consecutive road games to start the season is not a record. Most recently, the 2006 and 2008 teams both played exactly that many away from home to start the year and the 2004 team had 26 in a row away from Bowling Green to start the season. The 1988 team also played 26 straight away from home to begin the year.
In all, Bowling Green is scheduled to play 51 games with 16 of those taking place at home. The Falcons went 13-29 a year ago and 9-14 in MAC play, qualifying for the eight-team league tournament despite being picked to finish last in the division in the preseason coaches poll.
