Two-day tournament begins Friday in Glass City
The Bowling Green State University tennis team makes a short trip north this weekend, heading to the Glass City to compete in the Rocket Invitational. The two-day, five-team tournament, hosted by the University of Toledo, runs from Friday to Saturday (Oct. 8-9).
In addition to the Falcons and host Toledo, participating teams will include Cleveland State, Detroit and Duquesne. The tournament will be held at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts, just north of the Glass Bowl (football stadium).
Action will begin at 9:00 a.m. each day. No team scores will be kept at the Rocket Invitational, but the tourney will feature a hidden-dual format, in which teams will play head-to-head in both doubles and singles action.
The Falcons have participated in two fall events to date. Head coach Penny Dean's team hosted the BGSU Invitational (Sept. 18-19) to start the season, then competed at Michigan State's Spartan Invitational the following weekend (Sept. 24-26). BG captured five singles and two doubles titles in the opening weekend at Keefe Courts, as all seven Falcon players in action that weekend won at least one title.
Sophomore Mary Hill and freshman Emily Reuland each won titles at both singles and doubles in their initial weekend of competition as a Falcon. Senior Christine Chiricosta and sophs Maddy Eccleston and Katie Grubb won singles crowns at the BGSU Invitational. Freshman Nikki Chiricosta teamed with Hill for a doubles title, while Reuland paired up with junior Jessica Easdale to capture a doubles crown as well.
At the Spartan Invitational, Nikki Chiricosta won her singles flight, going a perfect 4-0, while Grubb and Reuland teamed up to go 3-1 in doubles and win the back draw of their flight.
The Chiricosta sisters each are 6-1 in singles this year, heading into the Rocket Invitational. Grubb has a 6-1 singles mark as well, while Eccleston, Hill and Reuland all are 5-2.
In doubles, Christine Chiricosta and Eccleston played together in each of the first two tournaments, and have a 5-2 mark this season. Likewise, Nikki Chiricosta and Hill have played together in both invites to date, and also are 5-2. Reuland is a combined 6-1 on the year, having gone 3-0 with Easdale at Keefe Courts and 3-1 with Grubb in East Lansing. Easdale has a combined doubles mark of 5-1 on the young season, having teamed up with several Marquette players for her doubles matches at MSU.
The Rocket Invitational is the Falcons' last team event of the fall schedule. Following this weekend's action, selected BGSU team members will head to Ann Arbor in late October for the ITA Midwest Regional.
