400-Yard Medley Relay Team Sets Pool Record
MEET RESULTS
The Bowling Green State University swimming team rebounded from its first loss of the season in impressive fashion by winning 10 of the 14 swimming events in a 174-119 victory over the Youngstown State Penguins at Youngstown's Beeghly Natatorium.
The afternoon began with a bang for the Falcons (2-1; 1-1 MAC) in the 400-yard medley relay. In the day's first event, BGSU swimmers set a Beeghly Natatorium record by completing the distance in just 3:58.92. That time broke the previous record, set in 2007, by nearly two seconds.
Emily Bennet, Alexis Kain, Vicky Yu and Brittany Szekely comprised the record-setting team. They won the race by 5.42 seconds over the Falcons' second entry. Youngstown State entered three teams; the closest to the winners finished over 25 seconds behind.
Bowling Green nearly set two other pool records in their victory. In the 100 backstroke, Bennet took top honors with a time of 1:00.78, just one second off the record pace. Bennet swept the backstroke events by earning a winning time of 2:13.01 in the 200 backstroke.
In all, the Falcons dominated the backstroke events, as their two entrants in the 100 back took the top two spots, while the team's three entrants in the 200 back took the top three spots. No YSU swimmer finished closer than three seconds to Bennet in either event.
Junior Vicky Yu had a very successful afternoon in the pool, as well. Yu competed in four events and won all four. As noted abvoe, she took part in the 400-medley relay winning team. Individually, Yu won the 100 and 200-free, as well as the 200 IM.
In the 200 IM, Yu led a relentless Falcon attack that resulted in BGSU taking the top three spots and four of the top five in the race. Yu finished in 2:12.13, over seven seconds better than the nearest Penguin.
The 100- and 200-free events were closer races from a Youngstown State perspective, but Yu still pulled them out. In the 100-yard event, Yu grabbed an early lead and refused to let it go, finishing in 54:51 and winning by 0.6 seconds. She earned a time of 1:57.45 in the 200-free, as she again led throughout the race.
Four other Falcons won races in this dual meet. Amanda Rom (1:07.88) won the 100 breast; Sarah Burston (2:10.66) won the 200 butterfly. Jen Beatty and Megan Bomicino swept the distance events, with Beatty winning the 500 free and Bomicino winning the 1000 free.
Bowling Green will now take a break from dual meets until the team hosts Eastern Michigan on January 14th, 2011 at Cooper Pool.
Between now and then, the team will travel to Ypsilanti, Mich. for the Eastern Michigan Invitational on December 3-4.
