MEET RESULTS
The Bowling Green State University swimming team opened 2011 with a hard-fought 158-136 loss to Eastern Michigan at BGSU's Cooper Pool on Friday night (Jan. 14).
The Falcons, who won the swimming events by a combined 136-126, were victorious in five individual events and one of the two relays.
Junior Vicky Yu swept the butterfly events. In the 100 fly, Yu completed the race in 57.56 seconds and won by seven-tenths of a second. She dominated the 200 fly, winning by 4.5 seconds and finishing in 2:04.40. Yu was also BGSU's top finisher in the 200 individual medley, placing second.
Alexis Kain, a Falcon sophomore, swept the breaststroke races. She won the 100 yard event by nearly two seconds after completing the distance in 1:04.02. Kain finished the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:19.83, winning by 2.3 seconds. Kain also raced in the 50 freestyle.
Yu and Kain combined for a third victory on the evening when they helped lead one of BGSU's two teams in the 200 yard medley relay. They joined Emily Bennet and Brittany Szekely in winning the event by one second (1:46.23).
The Orange and Brown's other individual win tonight came in the 200 backstroke. Alexa Harris, who finished in 2:06.91, took top honors in that race. Harris placed second in a very hard fought 100 backstroke race. Her time was 59.45 seconds, just behind the winner's pace of 58.72. She later placed fourth in the 200 individual medley.
The other highlight of the evening came in the 1000 freestyle race. The Falcons took second, third and fourth place in the event. Megan Bomicino led the way with a season-best time of 1:32.69, which surpasses her previous high by nearly seven seconds.
Kristina Roop (10:40.35, third) and Jennifer Beatty (10:41.19, fourth) each achieved personal records for the event.
With the decision, BGSU drops to 2-2 on the season and 1-2 in MAC competition. The win is Eastern Michigan's first of the season.
The Falcons return to action in 12 days when they host Cleveland State for Senior Day at Cooper Pool. The action begins at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 26. The team then travels to Toledo for their final MAC dual meet of the season on Friday, Jan. 28.
