Falcons Add Five During Early Signing Period
November 17, 2010 | Softball
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University softball coach Shannon Salsburg has announced that five student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to compete at BGSU beginning in 2011. Shelby Fink, Emily McClelland, Chloe Giordano, Jamie Kertes, and Paris Imholz have all committed to the Falcons. The five players come from five different states from around the country and bring some impressive accolades to the Falcons.
Fink is an outfielder from Big Walnut High School and hails from Sunbury, Ohio. She is the daughter of Rick and Angela Fink. She was the 2010 team MVP, has led Big Walnut High School to three consecutive league championships as well as a regional runner-up in 2009. In each of the past two years, she has been named first team all-district and was a second-team all-district winner in 2008. She was the team's Defensive Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009, received the Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award in 2007 and has been a scholar athlete from 2008 through 2010. Fink plays summer ball for Ohio Nightmares Gold.
“We are thrilled to add Shelby to our class,” Salsburg said. “She was considered one of the top prospects in the 2011 class in Ohio and will make an instant impact to the program. Shelby has the ability to hit for average and power, and her speed will keep pressure on opposing defenses. Her experience at the Gold level has allowed her to face many outstanding current and future Division I pitchers and she will come in prepared and ready to hit at the collegiate level from day one.”
McClelland is an outfielder from Union Grove High School and hails from Union Grove, Wisc. She is the daughter of Dave and Amy McClelland. She is a second team all-state player and was named Racine County Player of the Year. She was named first team all-district, first team all-area, and first team All Southern Lakes Conference in both 2009 and 2010. McClelland is also a two-time team MVP and was the team's Defensive Player of the Year in 2008. Her teams won regional championships in 2007, 2009, and 2010 and a sectional championship a year ago. McClelland plays summer ball for the Wisconsin Renegades.
“Emily brings an ability to play anywhere on the field thanks to her speed, arm, and overall knowledge of the game,” Salsburg said. “She also brings with her a big stick, capable of hitting the gaps and then letting her speed do the rest. Emily's desire to be the one with the ball or bat in her hand with the game on the line was evident the first time we saw her play. We are excited to see her develop at BG and are thrilled she decided to wear the Orange and Brown.”
Giordano is a middle infielder/outfielder from School of the Holy Child and hails from White Plains, N.Y. She is the daughter of Lawrence and Yvonne Giordano. She has been a Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) All-League player from 2008-2010 as well as team MVP those years. Her teams have advanced to the New York State Association of Independent Schools semifinals for three consecutive seasons and won a FAA regular season championship in 2008. She has 27 career homeruns in high school with a .524 batting average. Giordano plays summer ball for Jersey Inferno 18U Gold.
“Chloe brings with her a ton of experience at the highest national level,” Salsburg said. “She has played against the best and has found tremendous success at the Gold level. She is a big stick with the ability to play both middle infield and outfield. Her versatility, along with her knack for coming through in the clutch, made her a fantastic addition to this class.”
Kertes is a pitcher from Bishop Canevin High School in Carnegie, Pa. She is the daughter of Dave and Vikki Kertes. She was named to the PIAA All-State Team in 2010 and was a “Signal Item” Player of the Year as well as a member of the Diamond Dozen All-Star Team. Kertes was also a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Female Athlete of the Week and was named to the WPIAL All-Section Team and section MVP. With a full season remaining, she already holds Bishop Canevin's school records with 43 wins and 11 homeruns and ranks second with 439 strikeouts. Kertes went 14-3 a year ago with a 0.62 ERA and 177 strikeouts to just 10 walks. She plays summer ball for Tuff n Tuffer Gold.
“We are so excited for Jamie to join our pitching staff,” Salsburg said. “She has played against the best in the country and achieved great success. We look forward to watching her develop under Hayley Wiemer-Bradford's leadership. Jamie is a student of the game, constantly making adjustments in order to grow as a pitcher. She also brings a powerful bat to the team and will fight for time as a DH when not pitching.”
Imholz is a pitcher/outfielder from Antioch High School and hails from Antioch, Calif. She is the daughter of Alex and Debbie Imholz. She struck out 217 batters a year ago and hit .364 at the plate. Her team has finished second in the Bay Valley Athletic League two consecutive seasons and qualified for the North Coast Section playoffs each of those seasons. She was named to the Contra Costa Times Top 125 Athletes of the Year list and has been named Contra Costa Times Athlete of the Week each of the past three seasons. She was also named the team's Defensive Player of the Year in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Imholz plays summer ball for Bears 18 Gold.
“Paris is first and foremost a pitcher with the ability to spin the ball like no one we have seen,” Salsburg said. “Paris has also played at the Gold level which should make her transition to collegiate ball a lot smoother. When not pitching, we expect her to fight for a spot in the outfield. Paris is unique as she is a slapper with tremendous speed down the line. We look forward to the added depth she will give us in a lot of areas.”
