Detroit, Mich. – Four players scored in double-figures but the Bowling Green men's basketball team was unable to make up a nine-point second half deficit in a 65-61 loss to Niagara Friday evening. The game was the first of three in the course of three days in the Legends Classic, hosted by the University of Detroit.
Niagara used a 13-4 run, capped by a Marvin Jordan three-pointer, to take a 57-48 lead with 5:26 to play. But the Falcons fought back as Scott Thomas took a pass from outside the three-point line and drove baseline for a dunk. He then stole a pass on the next Niagara possession and fed Jordon Crawford for a lay-up that made it 57-52 with 4:29 to go.
The two teams traded free-throws until Dee Brown had a steal and found Thomas for another dunk, this time on a fastbreak, to make it 60-56 with 2:00 left. Niagara came up empty on its next possession and Brown's rainbow three-point attempt just missed. But A'uston Calhoun wrestled away the rebound and put it back to make the score 60-58 with 1:21 left.
Niagara senior guard Anthony Nelson, playing for the first time this year, scored on the Purple Eagles' next trip down the floor to extend the lead to four again but Calhoun scored and was fouled with 25 seconds left. He made the free-throw to cut the deficit to one and Bowling Green had one more chance after Jordan made two free-throws with 19 seconds left.
Niagara extended its defense and Luke Kraus was forced to attempt a long three-pointer with nine seconds left that caromed off and Kevon Moore's defensive rebound iced the contest.
Brown led the Falcons with 12 points, while Thomas, Cameron Black, and Torian Oglesby had 10 each. Oglesby played 27 minutes seeing action for the first time in his Bowling Green career. He added five rebounds and two blocked shots. Black came up one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards and Thomas had eight rebounds. In all, the Falcons held a 41-32 rebounding edge, including 22 on the offensive glass.
Bowling Green's offensive woes continued in the first half as the Falcons shot just 29 percent, but the team improved to 45 percent in the second half. However, BGSU missed all nine of its second-half three-pointers and shot just 57 percent from the free-throw line for the game.
Niagara improves to 2-2 on the season and Bowling Green falls to 1-4. The Falcons will play host Detroit Saturday at 7 p.m.
