Captains Named for 2011 Season

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green State University Baseball has named its captains for the 2011 season. Earlier today, the program announced that seniors Clay Duncan and Frank Berry will join junior Jon Berti as tri-captains for the upcoming season.

Berry, a fifth-year senior, returns to the team after spending much of the last two seasons recovering from a right arm injury. The senior from Virginia Beach, Va. will move from the mound to play third base this season. In 2008, Berry started 24 games in the field and made 12 appearances on the hill with 11 starts for the Falcons. In 96 plate appearances that season, he hit .240 with nine extra-base hits, 14 runs batted in and a 93.3 percent mark with his defense from the field. He played 15 games at first base, served as designated hitter for 13 and pinch-hit six times. Last season, Berry made four pitching appearances and was inactive in 2009.
After taking over as the team's full-time first baseman late in the season, Duncan became one of the Falcons' second-half surprises of 2010. He posted multiple-hit games in his first four and batted .289 after becoming an everyday player beginning May 7. Duncan ended the regular season with a season-high three hits and drove in two runs in the Falcons' MAC East clinching win against Buffalo. He also finished the season with a team-best .994 fielding percentage.
Berti set the bar high for the rest of the conference, so much his team, after putting together one of the best individual seasons a Bowling Green player ever had. He led the team in six offensive categories, including his 93 hits and .423 batting average that set a new program records. Berti earned All-MAC First Team honors, All-MAC academic honors and was named to the 2010 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/ Rawlings All-Mideast Region First Team.
Last year, Berry was one of four Falcons named to captain the 2010 squad. This will be his second consecutive season being named a captain. This season will serve as the first year of captaincy for both Berti and Duncan.
