BGSU begins conference play on March 26
The Bowling Green State University tennis team has been picked to finish sixth in the Mid-American Conference race in 2010, according to the MAC's preseason poll. The poll, released Monday (Feb. 1), is the result of voting by the league's head coaches.
Akron was the preseason pick to win both the regular-season and tournament titles, according to the conference coaches.
The Falcons received 28 points in the poll, which saw seven of the nine league head coaches submit their votes. UA received 60 points, followed closely by defending MAC champion Miami (55), Buffalo and Western Michigan (43 apiece), Toledo (35) and BGSU. Eastern Michigan (27 points), Northern Illinois (14) and Ball State (10) rounded out the poll.
The Zips received five of the seven votes to win both the regular-season title and the conference tourney crown.
The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean finished with an overall record of 12-7 in the 2008-09 season, and BGSU went 5-3 in MAC regular-season action a year ago, finishing fourth in the league. BGSU lost three seniors off of that team. This spring, the Falcons have gotten off to a 5-1 start in dual-match play.
BGSU's next action is Friday, Feb. 12, vs. Detroit. The Falcons' MAC opener is Friday, March 26, at Ball State, and the MAC Championships will be held April 29-May 2 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
