Falcons Kick Off 2010 in the Sun

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—Head coach Shannon Salsburg and the Falcon softball squad will soar into th 2010 season as they are set to travel south to compete in the Sunshine State Classic (Feb. 12-14) in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Falcons will see their first action of the tournament when they square off against the Mercer Bears at 10:00 a.m., but will be right back on the dirt for the first of two games against the Florida State Seminoles at 12:15 p.m. On day two of the three-day tournament (Feb. 13), BGSU will play back-to-back games against the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles at 2:30 p.m., and the Iona College Gaels at 4:45 p.m. On the third and final day of the Sunshine State Classic, the Orange and Brown will take on the Seminoles for the second time of the tournament at 11:15 a.m., before heading back to a snow-filled Ohio.
"We are really excited to hit the dirt," said Salsburg. "We look forward to seeing where we are and what we need to work on for future competitions."
Falcons vs. Bears • February 12 • 10:00 a.m.
BGSU will see their first action of the tournament (and of the 2010 season) when they take the field against the Mercer Bears. The upcoming contest will only be the second time these two teams have competed against each other in program history. The last time the Flacons met the Bears on the diamond was in 2004 at the Mercer Classic in Macon, Ga., where the Bears defeated the Falcons 3-1.
The Bears are led are head coach Mike Raynor who is in his fourth season with the softball program. In 2009, the Bears racked up an overall record of 40-19 and went 14-6 in Atlantic Sun Conference competition. They finished fourth overall in the A-Sun.
Falcons vs. Seminoles • February 12 • 12:15 p.m. • February 14 • 11:15 a.m.
Set to compete against the nationally ranked Florida State Seminoles twice at the Sunshine Classic, the Falcons will first meet the 'Noles directly following their game against Mercer. The Falcons second meeting with the Seminoles will be on Valentine's Day (Feb. 14).
In polls that were released last month, the Seminoles were ranked No. 23 in the nation by the USA Today/NFCA Preseason Poll, and No. 19 by the ESPN.com/USA Softball Poll.
BGSU met the Seminoles for the first time in program history in 2009 at the Judi Garmin Classic where the Falcons fell to the Seminoles 3-0. Overall in 2009, the 'Noles went 44-16 and 17-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Head coach Lonni Alameda, who has been with the program for six years, leads the Florida State softball program.
Falcons vs. Golden Eagles • February 13 • 2:30 p.m.
On the second day of the tournament, the Falcons will take on the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles in the first of two back-to-back games. The Golden Eagles went 26-28-2 overall in 2009 and 10-3-1 in Conference USA competition. Led by head coach Howard Dobson, Southern Mississippi finished sixth in the conference on the season. Saturday's matchup between the Falcons and the Golden Eagles will be the first meeting between the two teams in program history.

BGSU will wrap-up day two of the Sunshine State Classic with an evening game against the Iona College Gaels. In 2009 the Gaels went 13-27 overall and 4-10 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. They finished eighth in the MAAC overall. Jamie Wohlbach, who is in her third year with the program, coaches the Iona Gaels. Again, Saturday's meeting between the two teams is the first in program history.
