Falcons Top Detroit, 5-2, to Run Win Streak to Six
February 12, 2010 | Women's Tennis
The Bowling Green State University tennis team ran its winning streak to six matches with a 5-2 victory over the University of Detroit Mercy Friday night (Feb. 12). The non-conference dual was held at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 6-1 in dual-match play this season, while dropping the Titans to 0-5.
BGSU is now a perfect 9-0 in dual matches played at the PTC. The 2009-10 season marks the second year that the venue has been the indoor home of the Falcons.
The Brown and Orange earned the first point of the night with three narrow victories in doubles play. Two BGSU duos improved to 6-1 in dual-match action, including the Falcons' top-flight tandem of junior Christine Chiricosta and freshman Maddy Eccleston. That team won by an 8-6 outcome, as did the second-flight team of senior Katia Babina and freshman Jade Johnson.
At the third flight, senior Samantha Kintzel teamed with freshman Katie Grubb for an 8-5 win over their UDM counterparts. The Kintzel/Grubb duo is 2-0 in dual matches and 3-0 overall this season.
In singles action, Chiricosta lost just three total games in her straight-sets win over Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom at the number-one flight. Babina battled Carolina Salas Espinosa through a three-set match, with the Falcon co-captain winning the first and last sets of that match.
The Titans picked up wins at the third and sixth flights, with the latter match seeing Melanie Capuano eke out a victory over Grubb. But, the Falcons got straight-set wins from Eccleston at the fourth flight and sophomore Jessica Easdale at the fifth, to get the match victory.
The Brown and Orange avenged a 4-3 loss at Detroit last year, a match that saw BGSU forfeit the third doubles and sixth singles flight due to injuries. BGSU now leads UDM, 6-1, in the all-time series between the teams.
The Falcons will take on another Michigan opponent on Saturday (Feb. 13), heading to East Lansing for a match against Michigan State University. First serve for that match is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
