Spartans Stop Falcons, 5-2, to Snap BGSU's Six-Match Win Streak

Chiricosta wins yet again at number-one singles flight
Host Michigan State University swept the doubles point, then captured four of the six singles matches for a 5-2 victory over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Saturday (Feb. 13). The non-conference dual match was held at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.

With the win, the Spartans improved to 4-4 this season. The Falcons dropped to 6-2 in dual-match play, and the loss snapped BGSU's six-match winning streak.
MSU swept the three doubles matches to claim the initial point, although the top-flight match was very tightly-contested. The Spartans' team of Silesova/Ivanova needed a tiebreaker to squeak past BGSU's duo of junior Christine Chiricosta and freshman Maddy Eccleston, 8-7 (4).
In singles play, the Spartans won four of the six matches, with Chiricosta and senior Samantha Kintzel picking up the Falcons' victories. Chiricosta continued her torrid singles play as of late, with a decisive win over Michaela Silesova by identical 6-1 scores at the number-one flight.
Chiricosta is now 7-1 in dual-match singles play, and 14-3 in all singles matches, this year. In her career, she is 56-17 in singles action.
Kintzel defeated Amy Barton in the opening set, then rallied back after losing in a tiebreaker in set two, winning a 6-4 third set to improve to 5-3 in dual-match singles this year to date.
The Falcons return to action next weekend, hosting UIC on Sunday (Feb. 21). That match is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
