BGSU hosts Detroit Friday, heads to MSU Saturday
The Bowling Green State University tennis team puts a five-match winning streak on the line this weekend, with a pair of duals against Michigan foes. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean host the University of Detroit Mercy on Friday (Feb. 12) before heading to East Lansing to take on Michigan State University in Saturday (Feb. 13) action.
Friday's Detroit match will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Perrysburg Tennis Center, with Saturday's dual at MSU slated for a 3:00 p.m. start.
The Falcons are 5-1 in dual matches this season, and BGSU has captured each of the last five contests after dropping the dual-match opener at Louisville back on Jan. 16.
BGSU is 2-0 at the PTC and 3-1 away from home. Following the Louisville match, the Falcons posted road wins over Morehead State (neutral site), Cincinnati and Xavier, before closing the month of January with victories over IPFW and Youngstown State in Perrysburg.
Individually, junior Christine Chiricosta is 5-1 in dual-match singles play at the number-one flight, while freshman Maddy Eccleston has gone 5-1 at the fourth flight. Senior co-captains Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel each have posted 4-2 records in singles play, with Babina competing at the second flight and Kintzel at the fourth. Babina was named the MAC Player of the Week for her efforts in the IPFW and YSU matches.
In doubles, the Chiricosta/Eccleston team has won five of six dual matches at the top flight, and Babina has teamed with freshman Jade Johnson for a 5-1 mark at the number-two flight.
Detroit enters the weekend with a record of 0-4 in duals. The Titans have been idle since facing Toledo on Jan. 29, a match won by the Rockets, 5-2. UDM's other three dual matches came against Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan and Michigan State, with all three contests ending in 6-1 results. Last year, the Titans finished with a 15-8 overall mark, and placed second in the Horizon League with a 6-2 ledger.
Michigan State is 2-4 on the season. The Spartans, coming off a 5-2 loss to Syracuse on Sunday (Feb. 7), will host UT Saturday morning prior to facing the Falcons that afternoon. The team's wins have come over Cleveland State and UDM, both by 6-1 scores. MSU has faced one MAC opponent this year to date, losing a 6-1 match to Akron. A year ago, the Spartans finished 8-16 overall and 1-9 Big Ten Conference play.
The Falcons hold a 5-1 lead over Detroit in the all-time series between the teams. But, UDM's lone win came last season as BG -- down to five healthy players -- forfeited at the sixth singles and third doubles flights in a 4-3 loss in the Motor City (Feb. 22, 2009). BGSU is 4-0 in home matches vs. Detroit, although this is the teams' first meeting at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. The Falcons saw the Titans earlier this season, as UDM participated in the BGSU Invitational in September.
The Falcons trail Michigan State, 13-1, in that series, and the Spartans have won eight-straight meetings since BGSU's lone series win, in the 1999-2000 season. The Falcons and Spartans have met in East Lansing in 10 of the last 11 seasons. All but one of the 14 total series meetings have been at MSU, and the teams have not met in Ohio since the 1985-86 season.
Following this weekend's action, the Falcons will host UIC next Sunday (Feb. 21) at the PTC, before playing the next four matches away from home. BG will travel to face Cleveland State on Feb. 26, and will play three matches in Orlando, Fla., from March 9-12.
