The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean are 6-2 in dual-match play this season to date. Last weekend, BGSU picked up a 5-2 win over Detroit at the PTC, but then dropped a 5-2 decision on the road against Michigan State. The MSU match snapped a six-match winning streak for the Brown and Orange.
Despite the loss to Michigan State, a number of Falcons had successful weekends. Junior Christine Chiricosta continued her stellar play in the two matches, losing a total of just five games in four sets at the top singles flight last weekend. Chiricosta has won four-straight singles matches and is 7-1 in dual-match singles play.
Senior co-captains Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel each are 5-3 in dual-match action. Babina saw a five-match winning streak snapped with a loss to Michigan State at the number-two flight, while Kintzel lost against Detroit, but bounced back with a victory at MSU. Babina, obviously, has won five of her last six singles matches, while Kintzel has won four of her last five.
Freshman Maddy Eccleston's results at the fourth flight have mirrored the results of her team to date. Eccleston lost her singles match at Louisville (Jan. 16), then proceeded to reel off six-straight wins before finally seeing her streak come to an end at MSU last weekend.
Several players have seen action at the fifth and sixth flights in the 'spring' season. Sophomore Jessica Easdale played at the fifth flight in both of last weekend's matches, going 1-1. Freshman Katie Grubb played at the sixth level in each of last week's two matches, and has been the Falcons' sixth-flight competitor in five of the eight duals to date.
In doubles play, the Falcons' top-two teams are each 6-2 to date. Chiricosta and Eccleston won three consecutive matches before suffering a narrow loss at MSU, while Babina and freshman Jade Johnson also saw a three-match winning streak snapped. Those two teams have lost only to Xavier and MSU in dual-match play.
At the third flight, Kintzel teamed with Grubb last weekend. That duo has been together for three dual matches so far, with Kintzel teaming with Easdale in four (BGSU won one third-flight doubles match by default).
UIC enters the weekend with a dual-match record of 5-2. The Flames will take on Toledo on Saturday (Feb. 20) before meeting the Falcons the following morning.
UIC's lone losses to date have come on the road against Marquette and Iowa State. The Flames' wins have come over Wisconsin, Northern Illinois, Chicago and Drake -- all on the road -- and at home vs. Eastern Illinois. The EIU match, the team's most recent action, resulted in a 6-1 UIC win on Valentine's Day.
A perennial Horizon League power, UIC has won an eye-popping 13 consecutive league titles. Under ninth-year head coach Shannon Tully, the Flames have never lost a Horizon League match. In fact, UIC has not lost a match to a conference foe -- in the regular season or in the league tournament -- since a 5-4 loss to Green Bay in the league's championship match on April 21, 1996. The Flames have won an amazing 113 consecutive matches against HL opponents.
UIC sophomore Mariya Kovaleva was named both the Horizon League Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year last season, while Ilinca Cristescu, now a junior, and Kristen McPhillips, now a senior, joined Kovaleva on the all-conference first team. Elena Antakova, a senior this season, earned all-league second-team honors a year ago.
The Falcons lead UIC, 10-6, in the all-time series between the teams. Last season, the Flames posted a 5-2 win over the Falcons in the Windy City (March 20, 2009). That result broke a five-match series winning streak for the Falcons. Two years ago, the Brown and Orange posted a 6-1 victory at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club (Feb. 9, 2008). The teams have met in each of the last 13 seasons.
Following the UIC match, the Falcons will end the month of February with a trip to Northeast Ohio to face Cleveland State on Friday, Feb. 26. BGSU's next home action is March 19, against Duquesne at the PTC.
