Ken Morrow In the Spotlight With Return to BGSU
February 27, 2010 | General, Ice Hockey
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- While the Falcons were busy skating on to a shootout victory against the No. 12/13 Michigan State Spartans on Saturday night, former BGSU Falcon and United States Olympian Ken Morrow sat down with the local media to discuss the upcoming U.S.A. / Canada gold medal showdown and how it relates to his experience on the magical 1980 "Miracle on Ice" team that won the gold medal that year.
Morrow, who played at Bowling Green between 1975-79, earned NCAA West all-American honors after the 1978 season. He had his best year as a Falcon in 1979 when he was named CCHA Player of the Year following his 15 goals and 37 assists in 45 games as a senior.
Morrow played 10 seasons in the National Hockey League as a New York Islander, a team that selected him 68th overall in the 1976 Amatuer Draft. After winning the gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, Morrow finished the 1980-81 NHL season with the New York Islanders and capped on an amazing year with a Stanley Cup victory in May of 1981. From 1980 to 1983, Morrow helped build a dynasty that brought four straight Stanley Cups to the Islanders.
After finishing his career with the Islanders in 1991, he returned to the team as an assitant coach before serving as the director of pro scouting. He was later inducted to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 1996 and won the Lester Patrick Award for his contribution to hockey in the United States.
